Abstract:

While the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child emphasizes the right of children to be protected from all forms of violence, physical and emotional punishment remains widespread. This presentation will provide an overview of punishment-based parenting strategies before describing the Positive Discipline in Everyday Parenting (PDEP) program, developed by Dr. Joan Durrant (University of Manitoba) to help parents transition from punishing children to positive parenting. Finally, preliminary results from a quasi-experimental project evaluating the effectiveness of PDEP will be presented.
