Biography

Dr. Zahrai received his Ph.D. degree in structural engineering in 1997 from the University of Ottawa with honor nominated for Governor of General Gold medal. He was then awarded NSERC post doctorate fellowship at roofing group of IRC in NRC of Canada until 1999 when he began his faculty member position at the School of Civil Engineering, the University of Tehran (professor since 2014). His main research interests are passive and active structural control, seismic evaluation and retrofit of buildings and bridges and analytical and experimental studies of connections in steel structures to improve their seismic behavior. He has authored many publications including 10 books, over 450 journal and conference papers, so far supervised about 180 graduate students’ theses and research projects, as a professional engineer and project manager directed lots of large steel and concrete building tower and bridge projects in design and construction phases, served a few conferences as the chairman, many international journals as member of editorial board or reviewer.

Dr. Zahrai has served the faculty of engineering at university of Tehran as deputy director in educational affairs for 6 years, acted as consultant for large building design and retrofit projects in different sectors including his own startup firms. He has been awarded two sabbaticals at Carleton university in 2012 and university of Ottawa in 2018 during which he had research collaborations with some a few professors.
