Biography

Patrick Richer is a teaching professor and Engineer-in-Residence in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ottawa. He is currently an active member of the uOttawa Cold Spray Laboratory, where he collaborates with Professor Jodoin and his research group on various projects. He obtained his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Ottawa in 2003 and then completed his doctorate in mechanical engineering also at the University of Ottawa in 2010 under the supervision of Professor Jodoin.  His thesis work, which focused on cold spray deposition of nanocrystalline MCrAlY coatings for use in aerospace thermal barrier coating applications, earned him one of the first cold spray-focused PhD degrees in Canada. From 2010 to 2014, he worked as a research and development officer for Brayton Energy Canada (BEC), where he led an effort to design and develop high-performance compact heat exchangers. During this opportunity, he introduced cold spray as an integral part of BEC’s heat exchanger manufacturing process, notably to create additively manufactured pin fins for enhanced thermal performance.  In 2014, he rejoined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ottawa as a teaching professor and has since been involved in uOttawa Cold Spray Laboratory activities. In 2018, he established a partnership with Dr. Hong from the Aerospace Research Center at the National Research Council of Canada, which has led to ongoing research on innovative transpiration cooling technologies for gas turbine engine combustors. Professor Richer is licenced as a professional engineer with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO), and his work has contributed to over forty publications in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
