Biography

Lyna Maaziz specializes in international law, with a particular focus on international litigation and procedural law. 

Her doctoral thesis, published as a monograph by LGDJ — Lextenso in 2025, examines interstate arbitration of maritime disputes. Her analysis of the procedural rules and principles guiding arbitration tribunals in fulfilling their adjudicative function naturally led her to explore dispute resolution in sports. Her current research focuses on disciplinary disputes involving sports federations and the activities of the Court of Arbitration for Sport. 

Alongside her academic career, Maaziz practises high-level kendo (Japanese fencing). Having passed the sixth dan herself, she serves as an instructor, referee and grading panel member. She is also a former international-level competitor. She was on the French kendo team for 12 years and served as captain of the women’s national team from 2019 to 2022. A two-time European team champion (2016 and 2022), she also won several individual titles and competed in two world championships (2015 and 2018). 

Professor Maaziz is currently accepting new students for thesis supervision.

Research

Maaziz’s research tackles dispute resolution at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, state disciplinary procedures and mechanisms in sports federations.

She is also interested in gender equality and the place of women in sports. Her work addresses issues including the rights of pregnant athletes, gender-based and sexual violence and dress codes in light of international and European human rights law as well as non-discrimination principles. Her research also looks at the protection of athletes from minority groups who face various forms of discrimination, including on the bases of ethnic origin, religion, political opinions, gender identity, sexual orientation and disability.

In addition, she examines economic issues in sports through the lens of environmental and climate law from a sustainability perspective.

Lastly, her scholarly work is increasingly focused on the right to development and the role of sport in economic development within developing countries and emerging economies.
