Called to the Ontario Bar in 1993, Stéphane Émard-Chabot has been with the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law for over 20 years in different capacities: Assistant Dean, Director of the Programme de droit canadien, and as full and part-time lecturer teaching municipal law, contracts, property law, business organizations, commercial law, insolvency law, oral advocacy, and legal writing.
After completing his studies, Stéphane served two consecutive terms as an Ottawa City Councillor and began to actively practice law in 2000. Stéphane advises municipal and private clients on a wide variety of municipal law matters, from land-use planning to questions of administrative and constitutional law. In that vein, since 2008, Stéphane has been advising and representing FCM (the Federation of Canadian Municipalities) on a wide variety of issues affecting municipalities across Canada. Stéphane also advises clients on business and contract disputes. Stéphane has appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada, the Court of Appeal for Ontario, the Federal Court of Appeal, the Divisional Court, and the Superior Court of Justice, as well as before administrative tribunals and the CRTC.
During his career, Stéphane served as Education Director at the National Judicial Institute – the training centre for Canada’s judiciary – from 2011 to 2013, and acts as a lawyer-consultant for Supreme Advocacy LLP.
Stéphane’s community involvement has included serving as Chair of the Board of the Ottawa Community Housing Corporation from 2000 to 2004 as well as being a Board member of the Youth Services Bureau, Orkidstra and La Nouvelle Scène. Stéphane is a regular commentator on municipal affairs for CBC and Radio-Canada.
