The University of Ottawa Community Legal Clinic (UOCLC) provides free legal services to eligible low-income individuals in the City of Ottawa and to Ottawa and Carleton University undergraduate students.

The UOCLC has been offering free legal services in the Ottawa community for almost 55 years!
Our services are provided by law students, who are under the supervision of Clinic lawyers. Please note that our capacity is limited, and even if you qualify for our services, our caseload might be full.


Our services

criminal-law

Criminal Law

We provide free legal advice and/or representation to people facing certain criminal offences under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Canadian Drugs and Substances Act where the Crown is proceeding summarily, and who have been denied a Legal Aid certificate.

Provincial Offences

We provide free legal advice and/or representation to people facing provincial offences under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, Liquor License and Control Act, etc.

Housing Law

We provide free legal advice and/or representation to tenants regarding issues such as their rights, maintenance and repairs, rent deposits, and termination of tenancies.

Family Law

We provide free legal advice and/or representation to parents and spouses regarding issues such as decision-making responsibility (formerly known as "custody"), parenting time (formerly known as "access*), child support, spousal support and divorces.

conference

Community Legal Education and Outreach

Through collaboration and coordination with partnership organizations, we design and prepare legal information sessions regarding various legal topics, with a goal to inform and educate the community about their legal rights and responsibilities.

Notary Services

We provide free notary services to undergraduate students at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University, including certifying true copies and swearing and affirming documents.
