Alum Candace Mak, LLB ’09, appointed to the Superior Court of Justice

The Ontario government is pleased to announce the appointment of Justice Candace Mak to the Superior Court of Justice. Chief Justice Geoffrey B. Morawetz has assigned Associate Justice Mak to Newmarket.

Associate Justice Candace Mak was called to the Ontario bar in 2011. Prior to her call to the bar, she was a judicial law clerk for the Superior Court of Justice. After three years as an associate at Laxton Glass LLP, she joined Flaherty McCarthy LLP, where she focused on plaintiff-side class actions and insurance defence litigation, including accident benefits, priority disputes and tort claims. In 2022, she became a lawyer at Scargall Owen-King LLP, providing expropriation-related advice and services to private landowners, municipalities and other public entities in Ontario.

Associate Justice Mak has participated in various volunteer initiatives, including the Law Society Foundation’s Lawyers Feed the Hungry program and Holiday Helpers Canada, which provides customized Christmas packages to families who are living in low-income situations. She is a member of the Ontario Expropriation Association, the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers and the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association.

Associate Justice Mak received an Associate Diploma (ARCT) from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Piano Performance, a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Toronto and a law degree from the University of Ottawa.
