This six-hour online course is designed for lawyers who missed taking tax in law school, law students wanting an introduction to tax, and anyone interested in learning the basics of income tax law in Canada.
Participants will gain a foundational understanding of the Canadian income tax system and how it applies to individuals. The course will cover the tax treatment of different types of income, losses, and expenses, and provide an overview of the tax administration and tax litigation system. It also provides a brief introduction to tax policy and introduces participants to common tax policy issues, focusing on equity, efficiency, and administrative challenges.
The course will be of particular value to lawyers who encounter tax issues in their practice but lack formal training in tax law, but it will also be helpful to all legal professionals hoping for a better understanding of tax law and tax planning. By the end of the session, attendees will understand basic tax matters, identify key potential tax issues for their clients, and know when to seek specialized tax advice.
The course is offered over two mornings, and is LSO accredited (5 hours PD, 1 hour EDI).
