At the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine, we are committed to advancing Planetary Health—a powerful movement that recognizes the interconnection between the health of humans and the health of our planet.

This site is your gateway to understanding what planetary health means, why it matters, and how we are taking action in education, research, and healthcare sustainability.

Climate change is the biggest health threat facing the globe, driving the spread of infectious diseases, biodiversity loss, and disrupting weather systems that threaten our food supply and essential resources (Source: Climate change crisis goes critical, The Lancet). Recognizing the urgent need for action, the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine has taken a leadership role tackling these challenges. As part of our 2020-2025 strategic plan, we embraced planetary health as a core priority, and in 2021, Dr. Husein Moloo was appointed the first Director of Planetary Health at a North American medical school.

Since this groundbreaking appointment, Dr. Moloo has adopted a strategic, systems-level approach to identifying solutions for reducing the medical field’s carbon footprint.

What is Planetary Health?

Planetary Health is: “the achievement of the highest attainable standard of health, wellbeing, and equity worldwide through judicious attention to the human systems—political, economic, and social―that shape the future of humanity and the Earth’s natural systems that define the safe environmental limits within which humanity can flourish. Put simply, planetary health is the health of human civilisation and the state of the natural systems on which it depends.” — The Rockefeller Foundation-Lancet Commission on Planetary Health, Source: Planetary Health: a new science for exceptional action, The Lancet (327 KB)
