Department of Family Medicine

Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine. We are the largest of 12 clinical departments within the Faculty of Medicine, with 675 faculty members, 120 of whom are primary preceptors who teach and mentor our 185 residents (Postgraduate Year 1 to Postgraduate Year 3: PGY1 to PGY3) in our Postgraduate training programs. Our department is supported by 35 administrative staff and numerous faculty members who fill key leadership roles. Our layered learning model provides comprehensive training in both official languages and ensures the success of our students at all levels in their learning journey – from being learners in our program to becoming confident family physicians.

Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence in Family Medicine

For five decades, the Department of Family Medicine has grown, evolved and led with purpose, shaping generations of family physicians, advancing community-based care, and championing health equity across our region and beyond. We invite you to watch our tribute to family doctors, honouring those who lead with dedication and compassion and supporting the communities they serve.

Indigenous Affirmation

We pay respect to the Algonquin people, who are the traditional guardians of this land. We acknowledge their longstanding relationship with this territory, which remains unceded. We pay respect to all Indigenous people in this region, from all nations across Canada, who call Ottawa home. We acknowledge the traditional knowledge keepers, both young and old. And we honour their courageous leaders: past, present, and future.
