The Department of Family Medicine’s Clinical Preceptor Award is presented to a faculty member who exemplifies outstanding performance in education, particularly in their teaching aptitude in guiding and providing feedback to learners that enhance their clinical skills and confidence. This award recognizes their exceptional interpersonal skills, highlighting their ability to foster strong relationships with learners and peers.

Selection Criteria

The selection criteria will be outstanding teaching; not to be narrowly defined and not limited to classroom teaching. Contributions to all aspects of teaching will be considered. The following list, which is not intended to be exhaustive, is considered typical:

• Explicitly embodies the roles, attitudes, and competencies of a family physician in clinical work
• Demonstrates a commitment to excellence in teaching and education of learners in their unit
• Promotes and stimulates clinical reasoning and problem solving
• Gives timely, learner-centred, and constructive feedback
• Excellent course evaluations by residents and students

The Department of Family Medicine’s Early Career Award is presented to a faculty member who is a recent graduate and in the early stage of their career within the Department of Family Medicine, having joined the department within the past five (5) years. This award celebrates emerging leaders whose early achievements in clinical care, education, research, scholarship, leadership, and community engagement advance the mission, values, and strategic priorities of the Department of Family Medicine and the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine.

Selection Criteria

The candidate must demonstrate competence in one or more of the following areas:

• Exhibiting meaningful impact relative to career stage in clinical care, education, research, scholarship, leadership, and/or community engagement.
• Showing clear leadership potential and a trajectory for continued excellence.
• Acting with professionalism, integrity and collegiality in all interactions.
• Contributing to equity, diversity, inclusion, and social accountability within the department and broader community.

The Department of Family Medicine’s Educational Leadership and Teaching Award is presented to a faculty member in recognition of their significant contributions to the development and implementation of innovative and transformative teaching materials and methods. This award recognizes the nominee’s ability to inspire and engage learners, thereby enhancing the overall educational landscape within the department.

The Department of Family Medicine’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Award is presented to a faculty member in recognition of their commitment, expertise, and contribution to advancing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in the Department of Family Medicine. Aligned with the DFM's Strategic Plan, this award recognizes the faculty member’s commitment to supporting deliberate approaches, initiatives, and actions that advance EDI principles and foster greater social accountability.

Selection Criteria

• Fostering an equitable, diverse, and inclusive culture and environment, focusing on improving care for Indigenous communities, by building relationships and outreach, participating in committees, groups, and collaborations.

This award recognizes faculty who significantly influence the personal and/or professional development of those they mentor. They have a profound impact on shaping the educational experience of our learners, advancing career growth, enhancing project and skills development, and supporting research initiatives within a nurturing and supportive environment.

An exceptional mentor also demonstrates excellence in the following:

• Creating a positive, trusting, supportive, environment and empathic relationship with mentees;
• Showing dedication to mentees and their success, supporting opportunities, collaborations, and connections;
• Embodying the role of competency coach -promoting mentee ownership of lifelong learning and career development, providing guidance and advice, and nurturing dialogue, feedback, and reflection;
• Demonstrating excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
• Serving as a role model including in roles outside of medicine;
• Development, implementation and/or leadership in mentorship programs/supports
• Upholding core values of professionalism;
• Demonstrating a positive attitude that inspires and enthuses learners and other faculty.

sustained commitment to initiatives that have a meaningful impact on learners, colleagues, the 
department and the broader community.

• Quality and impact of publications and/or presentations and/or scholarly contributions in the given year.
• Contributions to the field of primary care or health professions education.
• National and/or international reach.
• Practical contributions to the academic priorities of the Department of Family Medicine.
• Supervision of trainees in research/scholarship work.
• Innovation of the research and/or scholarship.

The Department of Family Medicine’s Undergraduate Educator of the Year Award is presented to a faculty member who exemplifies exceptional advocacy and leadership in Undergraduate teaching. The nominee fosters strong relationships with undergraduate learners and peers, actively bridging undergraduate and postgraduate learning opportunities, while promoting the Family Medicine program. This award recognizes the nominee’s ongoing efforts to inspire learners to choose Family Medicine while advancing the standards of Undergraduate Medical Education within the department.
