The Department of Family Medicine’s Faculty Development program is structured around the following core components:
Faculty Development
Our learning environment is grounded in innovative teaching and high-quality patient care, spanning in-unit, community, francophone, and rural settings, and is supported by a strong research presence, reflecting the full scope of family medicine practice.
Our educators bring diverse clinical and academic expertise, with many recognized as leaders in their fields. This breadth supports a rigorous, practice-ready training environment that consistently graduates high-caliber family physicians.
The strength of the program lies in its people. Faculty are committed to training the next generation of physicians and are supported through ongoing faculty development that advances excellence in teaching and scholarship.

New Faculty Orientation
This workshop is delivered to all unit-based and community preceptors and serves as the formal entry point into teaching within the Department. It provides a structured, half-day introduction to core teaching principles, expectations, and available supports for new faculty.
The session is offered annually during the first week of June and is designed to ensure consistency in onboarding, alignment with departmental educational standards, and early engagement in faculty development.
The next Faculty Orientation event is on Friday, June 5, 2026. To find more information, or to register, please visit the dedicated Eventbrite page.

Essential Teaching Skills (ETS)
More information and training materials are available on Brightspace (FM Corps professoral | Faculty).
The ETS program was developed to address preceptors’ desire and need to be better teachers and have more in-house faculty development. To date, three courses have been developed:
Essential Teaching Skills 1 — June 5, 2026
Essential Teaching Skills 1 develops practical skills to support learners within the clinical environment, with a focus on managing challenges encountered in real-world teaching.
The session addresses learner needs across training levels, including early identification of learners in difficulty and the application of structured approaches to feedback and support.
It also equips faculty with strategies to manage conflict in the clinical setting, whether between a learner and a preceptor, within care teams, or when performance, professionalism, or communication issues affect patient care and the learning environment.
Participants develop the ability to address conflict constructively, maintain psychological safety, and uphold academic and clinical standards, ensuring that both learner progression and patient care are sustained.
The next ETS 1 is on Friday, June 5, 2026. To find more information, or to register, please visit the dedicated Eventbrite page.
Essential Teaching Skills 2 - 3 — September 18, 2026
Essential Teaching Skills 2-3 builds faculty capability in managing learners in difficulty and addressing professionalism within the clinical training environment.
Faculty will apply structured approaches to identify performance concerns early, develop targeted learning and remediation plans, and document concerns in a clear, consistent, and defensible manner aligned with institutional expectations.
The sessions also focus on teaching and evaluating professionalism, equipping faculty to assess behaviours using observable criteria, address concerns directly, and implement appropriate interventions while maintaining both learner progression and patient care standards.

Additional Workshops and Courses
The Office of Continuing Professional Development (OCPD) develops, supports and coordinates learning activities for physicians in practice. They are an integral part of the continuum of medical education that begins with the undergraduate program, extends through postgraduate programs, and continues through life-long learning activities for licensed physicians.
