A word from our Program Director, Dr. Sohil Rangwala

Dr. Sohil Rangwala

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of Ottawa. Whether you are a prospective applicant, a current resident, or a valued faculty or staff member, thank you for taking the time to learn more about our program and our vibrant community.

Our program is fully accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and is dedicated to delivering an exceptional, learner-centered experience. As Program Director, my vision is to foster a supportive and inspiring environment where residents feel valued, challenged, and empowered. We are deeply committed to helping every learner attain the competencies needed to become skilled, compassionate family physicians ready to meet the needs of diverse populations.

Our work is guided by four strategic pillars: our education, our people, our research, and our social accountability. These pillars shape everything we do from offering flexible, innovative training pathways to nurturing a strong, collaborative community of residents, faculty, and staff. They also guide our commitment to excellence in teaching, to advancing knowledge through research, and to serving the diverse communities who depend on family medicine.

Our program offers a wealth of opportunities. Residents benefit from Canada’s largest and most advanced simulation centre, where they can safely develop and refine their skills. Transition-to-residency blocks help ease the move from medical school to residency, laying a strong foundation of confidence and competence from day one. Throughout training, horizontal family medicine electives foster continuity and depth of learning, while our evolving digital health curriculum prepares residents to integrate technology into modern practice. Unique experiences, such as rotations in Baffin Island, broaden clinical skills and deepen understanding of care in northern and rural settings.

We are also deeply committed to continuous quality improvement (CQI), always seeking feedback and innovation to ensure our program remains at the forefront of family medicine education.

I invite you to explore our program and experience the welcoming, dynamic community that makes the University of Ottawa such an exceptional place to train. Together, we will support you on your journey to becoming a confident, competent, and compassionate family physician.

Welcome, we look forward to learning and growing with you.

We offer educational experiences in both English and French, as well as in rural, remote and international settings. Our teachers and training sites are recognized for excellence and our residents graduate prepared to meet society’s evolving needs. We provide a diverse learning environment with many opportunities for personal growth and professional development.

What Do Our Graduates Say?

"The program here in Ottawa, and specifically my community family medicine site at Greenboro Family Medicine Centre with Dr. Tobin and the rest of my supervisors, prepared me better than I could have wished for my future in medicine."

Dr. Alexander Mungham

"I had the privilege of spending two months on Baffin Island at Qikiqtani General Hospital. This truly was the clinical highlight of my residency. It’s an experience that’s inspired me to continue to work with and advocate for our Indigenous populations during my career."

Dr. Catherine Brown

"The staff support at uOttawa is unlike any other. All staff I have encountered go the extra mile to support and advocate for you throughout the ups and downs of residency. This truly makes a difference and helps to promote a great learning environment."

Dr. Eddy Malouf

"The biggest thing I have learned going through the process of deciding “What Next?” is that family medicine is broad, it’s flexible, it’s multifaceted, and new opportunities come up all the time. Take the time to explore as many opportunities as possible and if you have certain interests – explore and pursue that! In family medicine, truly anything is possible!"
