Biography

Dr. Claire Kendall was appointed Associate Dean, Social Accountability at the Faculty of Medicine in November 2020 after having served under the title of Assistant Dean, Social Accountability from February 2020.

After completing a Baccalaureate in Science Biochemistry, Dr. Kendall earned her medical degree followed by a Women’s Health Fellowship, all at the University of Ottawa. She obtained a Master of Science, Public Health (distance) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London, England, and most recently, completed a PhD in Epidemiology at uOttawa.

Dr. Kendall has led the Faculty in advancing initiatives that align medical education and research with regional health priorities. The Office of Social Accountability has introduced faculty and learners to valuable experiential opportunities to work in tandem with communities and populations in need, including the Empathy Project and CityStudio Ottawa. The key partnerships, initiatives and agreements forged by Dr. Kendall with government, community and academia have guided the Faculty toward significant milestones in social accountability in alignment with its strategic priorities and goals.

A practicing family physician and a 20-year member of our faculty, Dr. Kendall is a Professor with the Department of Family Medicine and cross-appointed to the School of Epidemiology and Public Health. She is a seasoned clinician investigator who holds scientific appointments with the Bruyère Health Research Institute (BHRI) where she is the BHRI-DFM Clinical Research Chair in Primary and Community Health System Integration, as well as with l’Institut du Savoir Montfort and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, among others.

Dr. Kendall provides health-system leadership as Chair of the City of Ottawa’s Community Safety and Well-Being Plan Advisory Committee, a member of the Ottawa Ontario Health Team – Équipe Santé Ottawa Primary Care Network Leadership Committee, and an advisor to regional and national efforts to strengthen primary care system design.
