Kelly-Anne Bellefleur and Maddie Ottawa.
Students from the Development of Indigenous Family-Childhood Services – Foundations for Practice program at the School of Social Work of the University of Ottawa participated in the conference session “Decolonizing Pedagogical Practices: Student Experiences, Co-Teaching and Practicum Placements” as part of the ACFAS Congress held on May 13, 2026.

During the presentation, the students shared their experiences and reflections on the realities faced by Indigenous students in university and practicum settings. The presentation, “Making Space Rather Than Demanding Adaptation: Student Experiences in Indigenous Contexts,” facilitated by Professor Sarah Stewart, highlighted the experiences of Maddie Ottawa and Kelly-Anne Bellefleur. Daphne Uapukuan Ottawa, Caroline Dussault and Alynah Verreault also contributed to the broader group discussion.

The discussion focused on the importance of creating learning environments that are more inclusive and culturally safe for Indigenous students. Participants also spoke about ways educational institutions can adapt their practices to better support the realities and needs of Indigenous communities.

Supporting Indigenous student engagement

The students’ participation in the conference reflects the commitment of the School of Social Work to promoting inclusive, collaborative and community-informed practices grounded in Indigenous realities.

Travel support for the students was provided by the University of Ottawa Research Chair on Indigenous Peoples’ Self-Determination. This support helps encourage Indigenous student participation in spaces for dialogue, knowledge sharing and community engagement.
