Professors Leila Benhadjoudja and Célia Romulus
On March 26 and 27, 2025, the Afromusée in Montreal hosted a major symposium as part of the Week of Action Against Racism (SACR), under the theme: "Quebec: Land of the First Nations and Inuit for Millennia; Over 500 Years of Settler Presence. Review and Perspectives."

Two members of the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Social Sciences, Professors Célia Romulus and Leila Benhadjoudja, both affiliated with the Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies, participated as panelists. Their panel, held on Thursday, March 27, was titled “Constructing the Other in Times of Polarization.”

In a context marked by growing identity tensions and increasing debates around memory, recognition, and rights, their contributions shed critical light on power dynamics and dominant narratives that shape social representations in Quebec and across Canada.

Their participation reflects the Faculty’s commitment to Indigenization, social justice, and decolonial epistemologies. At the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ottawa, we are shaping tomorrow’s society every day. We foster an environment where diverse perspectives, critical research, and community engagement converge to inspire concrete solutions to today’s pressing challenges.

The Faculty is proud to support its researchers’ participation in dialogue spaces such as the CIDIHCA symposium, which contribute to advancing conversations on reconciliation, Indigenous knowledge systems, and the shared history of the land.
