Never Stop Asking “Why”: Dr. Vincenzo Lionetti Inspires Trainees at July Seminar and Mentorship Session

On July 20, the Brain-Heart Interconnectome (BHI), in partnership with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI), hosted Dr. Vincenzo Lionetti, MD, PhD, as part of the Brain-Heart Interconnectome Research Seminar Series. An accomplished anesthesiologist and intensivist, Dr. Lionetti is the Founder and Scientific Director of the Translational Critical Care Medicine Unit (TrancriLab) at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa, Italy, where he has also practiced at the Gabriele Monasterio Foundation since 2009. His work bridges bedside critical care and translational science.

The hybrid seminar drew 73 attendees, including 60 trainees, and Dr. Kyoung-Han Kim facilitated it by introducing the speaker and moderating the question period. Dr. Lionetti presented a seminar titled “Vagus Nerve Regeneration and Premature Aging of the Heart: The Heart–Brain Interconnectome?” The seminar examined how the loss of neural connectivity between brain and heart drives premature cardiac aging. Focusing on the right vagus nerve as the primary parasympathetic conduit between the two organs, Dr. Lionetti presented findings from a mini pig model showing that severing this single connection reproduced hallmarks of denervated transplanted hearts, including reduced ventricular strain, diastolic dyssynchrony, inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction. He then demonstrated that reconnecting the nerve using a bioengineered conduit reversed these effects within four months, leading him to propose “vagal failure” as a clinically relevant condition and to outline a modified transplantation approach that restores the heart-brain connection. His seminar generated an engaging discussion, with questions from attendees on sex differences in parasympathetic function, chronic inflammatory mechanisms, and biomarkers of vagal regeneration (A recording of Dr. Lionetti’s seminar can be viewed here).

Following the seminar, trainees and fellows gathered for an in-person Mentorship Session at UOHI led by Termeh Aslani, a UOHI and BHI trainee and Shida Pourlotfi, a BHI Training and Mentorship (T&M) Cross-Cutter Trainee Representative and session moderator. This brought Dr. Lionetti and trainees together over lunch for an open and enriching conversation. 

Dr. Lionetti left trainees with an inspiring message about what it means to be a scientist. Drawing on his career and volunteer experience working with vulnerable communities, he emphasized that health research is about improving lives. He reminded trainees that there are “two ways to save a life”: by applying existing knowledge to improve care or by discovering something new that opens possibilities for future treatments. This perspective was rooted in his firsthand experiences volunteering abroad, where he witnessed poverty, illness, and human suffering, which reinforced the importance of understanding the people behind the health challenges researchers aim to address. This message aligns with the goals of the BHI, where researchers from diverse disciplines work together to uncover new knowledge about the links between brain and heart health. By working closely with patient partners, embracing diverse viewpoints, and asking new questions, interdisciplinary research can uncover connections and create opportunities to improve patient care. His advice encouraged trainees to step outside their comfort zones, seek experiences that expose them to different realities, and develop an understanding of the people behind the issues they aim to solve. He noted that these experiences help build better researchers and more compassionate, impactful leaders. His final piece of advice was to never stop asking “why.” Whether exploring a research question, learning from another discipline, or reflecting on the world around them, curiosity is often a first step to discovery. Mentorship sessions such as this one give trainees the opportunity to learn directly from scientific leaders, hear the stories behind their success, and gain practical advice that can shape their own research journeys.
