Together, we will prevent dementia across Canada by empowering individuals to adopt healthy lifestyle changes.

About the uOBMRI

Since its establishment in 2012, the University of Ottawa’s Brain and Mind Research Institute (uOBMRI) has been committed to advancing interdisciplinary research excellence on the brain and mind for greater impact.

The uOBMRI’s strength is in its unique virtual model to promote collaborations — across disciplines; across our affiliated research hospitals, between researchers and knowledge users; and across the Ottawa region and internationally.  Today, the uOBMRI is the largest institute at the University of Ottawa, and with over 250 members, one of the largest in the country, creating a dynamic hub for internationally recognized research and training.

The uOBMRI leverages its extensive network by coordinating interdisciplinary research and training efforts across multiple university faculties, six affiliated hospital research institutes, Carleton University, and five internationally recognized research networks and centres.

About the dementia prevention campaign

The University of Ottawa Brain and Mind Research Institute (uOBMRI) is Ottawa’s largest assembly of basic researchers and clinician scientists, coming together from eight faculties and six hospital affiliated research institutes. Focused on brain and mind health, these collaborations will support two goals: maintain health and improve care. In Canada, the number of people diagnosed with dementia has grown rapidly, creating a healthcare crisis threat. In response, the uOBMRI has launched this campaign to encourage Canadians to discover the power of their brain, reduce the risk for dementia and embrace healthy aging.

About our partners

The success of the University of Ottawa Brain and Mind Research Institute depends on its partnership with: The Ottawa Hospital and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, The Royal and The Royal’s Institute of Mental Health Research (IMHR), Bruyère Continuing Care and the Bruyère Research Institute, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and the CHEO Research Institute, as well as, Hôpital Montfort and Institut de recherche de l’Hôpital Montfort. Eight University of Ottawa faculties are involved as well—the faculties of Medicine, Science, Health Sciences, Education, Engineering, Art, Law and Social Sciences.

We are also building on our unique strengths in neurology, epidemiology, basic neuroscience and systems biology, fields that are crucial to mapping the complicated pathways that lead to disease.

Our affiliated hospitals and research institutes help to create productive relationships with medical research communities across Ottawa and around the world, to stimulate engagement with relevant scientists and clinicians and to support education and research across a wide range of neuroscience specialties.
