Ogochukwu Monye
Postdoctoral Fellow, Open AIR

Dr. Ogochukwu Monye is a Postdoctoral Fellow with Open AIR at the University of Ottawa Centre for Law, Technology and Society.

A legal scholar focused on the intersection of technology, labour rights, and innovation, Dr. Ogochukwu Monye leads a pioneering study on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the rights of gig workers in Africa. Her research seeks to develop a comprehensive legal and ethical framework that safeguards freelancers in sectors such as ride-hailing, delivery services, and online freelancing.

By advocating for fair treatment, ethical AI standards, and enhanced regulatory oversight, Dr. Monye’s work aims to ensure sustainable working conditions and data privacy for gig workers. She also explores how AI technologies can be developed to better reflect Africa’s unique socio-economic contexts, challenging the imposition of unsuitable external technologies and rules.

Previously, Dr. Monye contributed to legal research advancing technology governance in Africa. Under the supervision of Professors Chidi Oguamanam and Jeremy de Beer, her work at Open AIR contributes to examining knowledge governance regimes that influence regulation for innovation across sectors like gig work, green energy, and foreign investment.
