A 2021 research project led by uOttawa’s Kelly Bronson, Canada Research Chair in science and society, and Mascha Gugganig, Alex Trebek postdoctoral fellow in artificial intelligence and environment, set out to explore how emerging agri-industry technologies might benefit small-scale farmers, as well as what the technologies’ limits are, and why.

Funded by the University’s Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), one of the goals of the three-year  Diversity by Design research project is to examine if and how public investment in digital agriculture serves biodiverse forms of farming.  Design workshops will offer a space for engagement between farmers, technology developers and designers, policymakers and researchers to better understand if, how, and what kinds of (digital) technologies can best serve small-and-medium-scale farmers.
