Co-led with Professors Angela Cameron and Anne Levesque (Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, University of Ottawa), and in collaboration with Professors Sarah Seck and Naiomi Metallic (Schulich School of Business, Dalhousie University) as well as Sarah Morales (Faculty of Law, University of Victoria), the project will provide the first comprehensive mapping of NJRMs across Canada. It aims to assess their effectiveness, particularly in addressing gender-based violence linked to extractive and energy projects.
As Canada accelerates resource development to support the transition to a greener economy and strengthen energy security, research shows increased risks of violence affecting women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals. Despite international obligations, Canada lacks a coherent legal framework to regulate such harms or ensure accessible remedies.
The project will evaluate existing mechanisms, review global best practices, and identify gaps in prevention and redress. Its findings will inform law and policy reform and will be shared with governments, Indigenous communities, policymakers, and civil society through reports, policy briefs, and academic outputs.
