Dr. Michael Geist argued that Bill S-225, An Act to amend the Copyright Act (remuneration for journalistic works), is an ill-advised foray into copyright reform as it misunderstands the technology used by the news media sector and does not address the core issues at play.
In his opening remarks to the Senate Committee, Dr. Geist tackled numerous challenges posed by Bill S-225, especially pertaining to self-censorship, risks to freedom of expression, protecting innovative startups, increased government intervention in the journalism sector, and more.
