Laboratory Safety Orientation

This Laboratory Safety Orientation is intended for non-lab -workers that may enter labs as part of their work (ex: trades, operations, IT, etc.) to provide services such as caretaking, repairs/maintenance, design and project management, consulting, etc. that may complete their work in active research labs. 

This orientation provides an overview of the hazards, entry requirements and safety measures present in laboratories across campus. It is a pre-requisite (not a substitute) to lab-specific information. Persons entering laboratories are required to coordinate entry and activities with the area (lab) supervisor before entering those spaces. WHMIS is a prerequisite for lab entry and should be completed prior to viewing this video. 

When Faculty or Services engage external service providers to perform work in active laboratory spaces, the service providers are required to review this orientation video prior to entering the lab. Departments should ensure that service providers are made aware of this requirement.

Service providers will be asked to complete a survey to register completion of orientation, and provide confirmation of completion (for example, a record of employee names, dates, and acknowledgment of having viewed the video). Departments are encouraged to retain documentation (such as an email or memo) confirming that the orientation video has been shared with the contractor or consultant.
