What was your last career change?
My most recent career change was returning to uOttawa as a web developer. I had previously worked here starting in 2014 before exploring opportunities elsewhere.
What made it successful?
I believe my familiarity with the university's systems and culture from my previous tenure has been a significant advantage.
What was the biggest challenge in adapting to your new role?
The primary challenge was learning the legacy code of ongoing projects so I could contribute effectively without disrupting existing functionality.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career change?
My advice would be to thoroughly research the new role or industry. Understand the skills required and, if possible, connect with people who already work in that field. Continuous learning is key in the tech world, so be prepared to adapt and acquire new knowledge.
What three items would you bring if you were shipped to a deserted island?
A volleyball, an unopened FedEx package, and the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy DVD set.
What are the most common cybersecurity threats staff should be aware of?
Phishing emails designed to steal your credentials are probably the most common threat you will encounter.
What’s the single most important thing someone can do to stay secure online?
Enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all your accounts provides the strongest protection against takeovers.
How can staff contribute to building a stronger cybersecurity culture?
Staff can contribute by staying vigilant and reporting anything that seems suspicious, no matter how small.
