What was your last career change?
Throughout my academic career, I had gained considerable work experience in different companies. As of last, I had joined the IT security team as a part-time Junior Analyst which allowed me to indulge into the cybersecurity world and apply my knowledge to protect the community. Thanks to that experience, I was able to join the team, after my graduation, on a full-time basis as a Senior Security Analyst.
What made it successful?
One of the main reasons that my last experience was successful and allowed me to transition into a full-time status was the colleagues I was surrounded by. I constantly have a support system that allows me to grow as a student and as a professional. I would also like to consider that my initiative and my willingness, not only to go further and beyond, but also to ask and learn from others, played a huge part in my journey.
What was the biggest challenge in adapting to your new role?
The biggest challenge in adapting to my new role would be my transition from a full-time student to a full-time professional. Surprisingly enough not for the reasons that one would think, if not the opposite. As a full-time student I had to manage multiple things at the same time to the point of overworking myself. As a full-time professional I get the chance to focus my energy on one thing I like, which is my work and to get better at it. This in fact, mentally, has proved to be a bigger challenge that I anticipated as I am not used to it, which shows the importance of mental health and time management.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career change?
As privileged as this might sound or as risky as it may be, always follow your passion. If you find something you’re passionate about, you’ll never work a day in your life.
How can colleagues help someone transition into their new responsibilities?
Honestly the best way colleagues can help someone transition into their new role would simply be to answer questions with no judgment and be available when needed.
What ingredient should never be found on a pizza?
I would rather answer that pineapples do in fact belong on a pizza.
What are the most common cybersecurity threats staff should be aware of?
- Phishing emails/Malware: Never click links or attachments from emails you are not expecting.
- Social Engineering: Be vigilant to not give anybody access to your accounts or any information that may lead to compromising your network safety.
- Password Spray: The importance of updating and using different strong passwords, as attackers can often gain access to accounts by simply trying different common passwords.
What’s the single most important thing someone can do to stay secure online?
While there may not be one definitive answer, a common and often overlooked risk is connecting to public Wi-Fi networks. These networks are typically unsecured and prone to cyberattacks, making users vulnerable to data interception and other threats. To mitigate this risk, using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is highly recommended, as it encrypts your internet traffic and helps protect sensitive information.
How can staff contribute to building a stronger cybersecurity culture?
The most important thing staff can do to build a stronger cybersecurity culture would be to simply stay aware, meaning to always consider cybersecurity in their day-to-day online activities and be vigilant from common threats.
There are tools that have been provided for this, such as the Digital self-defence training platform that allows staff to learn more about cybersecurity, threats and how to avoid and mitigate against them.
