Swim to Survive: Learn to be safe and confident in the water with this essential life skill workshop

This workshop series is a Gee-Gees Care community outreach initiative. The program follows the Lifesaving Society’s Swim to Survive curriculum and is administered by certified instructors. Participants will also receive additional mentorship and guidance from members of the Gee-Gees varsity swimming team throughout four sessions focused on essential water safety skills.

Feeling unsure in and around water is more common than you think, and you’re not alone. This welcoming, supportive, free workshop series is designed for adults who are new to swimming and want to build confidence, learn foundational water‑safety skills, and be better prepared if they ever find themselves in the water. No experience is required. Just a willingness to learn in a safe, calm, encouraging environment.
This series is for:
- Adults who feel uncomfortable or anxious around water
- Anyone who never learned to swim but wants to start
- People looking to build essential water‑safety skills
- Individuals who want a supportive, judgment‑free learning environment
What you will learn each session:
Session 1: Treading Water – March 18, 2026
Discover how to stay afloat using simple, sustainable movements. You’ll learn techniques that help you remain calm, conserve energy, and maintain control in deep water.
Session 2: Comfort on Front & Back – March 25, 2026
Build confidence by learning how your body naturally floats. You’ll practice relaxed positions on both your front and back – key skills that help you stay safe and breathe easily in the water.
Session 3: Entering & Rolling into Water – April 1, 2026
Learn how to safely enter water and orient yourself once you submerge. This session focuses on body awareness, rolling techniques, and staying composed if you ever fall into a pool, lake, or river.
Session 4: Basic Swim Strokes – April 8, 2026
Put your new confidence into motion. You’ll be introduced to simple, effective swim strokes that help you move through the water with ease and control. During this final session, participants will also have the opportunity to attempt the Lifesaving Society’s Swim to Survive standard.
