Biography

Brett Shannon is an assistant professor in the uOttawa Faculty of Health Sciences. An Indigenous Australian (Ngugi) physician–scientist, Shannon integrates epidemiological methods, Indigenous research methodologies and community-engaged approaches to address complex Indigenous health challenges.

Professor Shannon is not accepting new students for thesis supervision.

Research

Shannon’s research focuses on community-controlled health services, environmental health, worker health and safety, and mental health. Guided by Indigenous leadership, community priorities and long-term partnerships, his research program brings together population health methods and Indigenous and community-engaged approaches to better understand the determinants of health and well-being.

A key focus of his work is developing Indigenous-defined indicators and measurement frameworks that reflect community priorities, strengthen health systems and services, and support meaningful evaluation of health and well-being. Shannon is committed to translating research into practical, community-led solutions that advance health equity and contribute to improved outcomes for Indigenous communities.
