Information for Law Students

Law students in the Faculty of Law can benefit from experiential learning and support the Lands and Consultation Hub. Students can take the Lands and Consultation course to participate in the work of the Hub. They can also participate in a Student Proposed Internship (SPI) or a Directed Research Project (DRP). Materials produced and experiences gained will serve First Nations’ interests in lands and in the area of duty to consult and accommodate.

Ways to Get Involved

Student Proposed Internship

Students who enroll in a SPI with the Hub will get to learn from a variety of experiential learning opportunities. Students will learn from a variety of tasks such as:

- Speaking with First Nation entities about their land and consultation challenges
- Participating in delivering legal training and training on consultation and land management to First Nation leadership and lands officers.
- Providing legal educational tools where helpful such as:
o Access to case summaries
o Links to relevant legislation and policies
o Template language for letters, protocols and agreements

Directed Research Project

Students who enroll in a DRP research a more specific legal topic which is within the scope of the Hub’s work. Examples of these topics include:

- Draft educational chapters, papers, research memos and other resource tools relating to lands, consultation and accommodation.
