John Charles Polanyi Prizes

The Government of the Province of Ontario has established a fund to provide annually up to five prizes to outstanding researchers in the early stages of their career who are continuing to post-doctoral studies or have recently started a faculty appointment at an Ontario university.

University of Ottawa Distinguished University Professor

The OCUFA award embraces virtually all levels of instruction – graduate and undergraduate teaching, continuing education and faculty development. Patricia Price Browne Prize in Biomedical Ethics

This prize recognizes the importance of ethics in confronting the critical biomedical issues of the day. The ideal candidate would have made an outstanding contribution through active service in medical ethics by serving on appropriate committees or commissions, or by improving the profession’s effectiveness in upholding its ethical standards through advocacy of policies, provision or organization of services. National Academy of Sciences Awards

Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Medicine

The Dr A.H. Canadian Association for Medical Education (CAME) Awards

CAME has two external awards competitions with nominations submitted directly to CAME:

• Ian Hart Award: recognizes senior faculty who have made an exceptional contribution to medical education throughout their academic career. Nominees must be CAME members and the initial nomination must be made by a CAME member. The recipient is awarded a commemorative plaque and a prize of $1,000.
• Meredith Marks New Educator Award: recognizes individuals in the first full time phase of their educational professional career who have made a significant contribution to medical education. Nominees must be CAME members and a CAME member must make the initial nomination. The recipient is awarded a commemorative plaque and a prize of $1,000.
• CAME Service Award: This award honors individuals who have shown a strong dedication to advancing medical education. It is presented to those who have made significant contributions through service and leadership in medical education across Canada.
• CAME Mid-Career Achievement Award:This award honors a mid-career CAME member who consistently contributes to advancing best practices in medical education. It recognizes sustained impact across the training continuum and has two categories: one for PhDs (or equivalent) and one for MDs.

The Shaw Prize in Life Science & Medicine

The Shaw Prizes are international awards to honour individuals, regardless of race, nationality, gender and religious belief, who are currently active in their respective fields and who have recently achieved distinguished and significant advances, who have made outstanding contributions in academic and scientific research or applications, or who in other domains have achieved excellence. The award is dedicated to furthering societal progress, enhancing quality of life, and enriching humanity's spiritual civilization.

Canadian Association for Medical Education (CAME) Awards

The University of Ottawa offers two local awards with internal adjudicating committees. These are then recognized at a national level by CAME.

• CAME Rising Star Certificate of Excellence: Recognizes learners who have demonstrated a commitment and/or passion for medical education. This could be education research, curriculum or workshop development, leadership, advocacy, etc., that has had a positive impact for the health professions education community at their school or beyond. The award includes a certificate and the opportunity to write an article for the CAME newsletter. There are up to three awards at each Canadian medical school: 1 for medical students; 1 for residents/fellows; 1 for graduate students. The initial nomination must be made by a CAME member.
• CAME Certificate of Merit Awards: Recognizes and rewards faculty committed to medical education (undergraduate, postgraduate, CME/CPD and Faculty Development), and promotes CAME at Canadian medical schools. Recipients and nominators need not be members of CAME. Recipients will have made a contribution to medical education deemed to be valuable within their medical school (teaching, assessment, evaluation, educational leadership, course coordination, education, research).

CIHR-ICRH/CAEP Mid-Career Lecturer Award in Emergency Medicine

This award recognizes an individual's outstanding contribution to the advancement of emergency medicine in Canada and internationally at the mid-point of their career. The award will be presented to the selected candidate at the 2023 CAEP Annual Scientific Meeting, where the recipient will deliver a lecture as part of the scientific program. The individual may have conducted work in any one of a number of emergency medicine disciplines and within any of the four CIHR research theme areas: biomedical; clinical; health systems and services; and social, cultural, environmental and population health.

Gruber Foundation Prizes

The International Prize Program honors individuals in the fields of Cosmology, Genetics, and Neuroscience, whose groundbreaking work provides new models that inspire and enable fundamental shifts in knowledge and culture. Each prize carries a gold medal and unrestricted cash prize of $500,000. The categories include: 

• Neuroscience. Individuals from anywhere in the world who have conducted highly distinguished research in the field of the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nervous system may be nominated.

CIHR Barer Flood Prize in Health Services and Policy Research
