The Division of Medical Physics comprises scientists who use their physics expertise to advance patient care through research and innovation.

The Division has active research in radiation therapy planning and delivery, ablative radiation therapy and novel strategies in magnetic resonance imaging. Additionally, the group is active in developing tools to further the use of automation and AI in clinical processes, both locally and in collaboration with national organisations.

The clinical scientists within the Division of Medical Physics work within a large clinical radiation medicine program, treating over 6000 patients a year across a variety of treatment platforms, including conventional linear accelerators, a CyberKnive, an MR Linac and an active brachytherapy program. Clinical development and research are supported by collaborations with large teams of radiation therapists and radiation oncologists.

A key role of the Division of Medical Physics is to prepare the next generation of clinicians and scientists, with the goal of advancing patient care within the Ottawa Region, nationally, and globally.   

Medical Physicists provide didactic and informal training on the physics of medical imaging and radiation therapy to medical residents in Radiology and Radiation Oncology. Physicists also provide teaching with the graduate program in Clinical and Translational Medicine through the University of Ottawa.

Research supervision of undergraduate and graduate students in physics and related scientists provides an important pipeline for the future. The group also provides a CAMPEP-accredited residency program in Radiation Oncology Physics, hosted at The Ottawa Hospital

Clinical Sciences and Translational Medicine, Concentration in Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences

Advances in medical imaging and associated technologies have transformed modern medicine. These advances have transcended diagnostic applications to lead to new therapies in the form of image guided interventions in surgery and radiation oncology, as well as novel applications of artificial intelligence and virtual reality.

With these advances comes an increase in the numbers and complexity of deployed systems. There will be a need for individuals who can understand these technologies and contribute to research that optimizes their clinical application.

This proposed concentration in Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences will bring together technical and clinical experts to enable multidisciplinary research. This concentration is looking for appropriately qualified individuals in clinical research involving medical imaging, radiation-based therapy, and other diagnostic and therapeutic applications of technology. Students would have undergraduate degrees in science (physics, engineering, computer science, chemistry, biology) OR a bachelor’s degree and appropriate clinical expertise as a licensed medical radiation technologist or board certification in an aligned medical discipline including but not limited to diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, or radiation oncology.

Residency Program

Clinical Residency in Radiation Oncology Physics

The goal of the 2-year CAMPEP accredited residency program at The Ottawa Hospital is for residents to be prepared to work in a clinical setting upon completion of the program and to prepare candidates for certification by the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM). The residency program is supported in part by Ontario Health – Cancer Care Ontario, which supports a number of post-graduate positions in clinical physics within the province, aimed at providing a solid foundation in medical physics applied to radiation oncology. The Ottawa Hospital Radiation Oncology Physics Residency Program has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP) since 2007. In a typical year, the residency program has four residents enrolled. Residents will complete a series of clinical rotations and will participate in a range of clinical activities within the radiation medicine program, all of which emphasize hands-on, clinical experience. Residents are expected to complete a research project during their 2-year program and will have numerous teaching opportunities. The structure of the program is designed to provide flexibility, within the requirements of the CAMPEP curriculum, to allow the trainees to direct their focus to clinical opportunities as they arise and based on their interests.

Qualifications and Basis of Award

Admission requirements to The Ottawa Hospital program are as described by CAMPEP on its website, and the preferred entry requirement is a Ph.D. degree in medical physics from a CAMPEP-accredited graduate or certificate program.  In accordance with Canadian Employment and Immigration requirements, preference is given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada. Residency positions are awarded on the basis of academic achievement and the potential for a professional career as a clinical medical physicist. Residency candidates should have good verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated research ability and a strong interest in working with a multi-disciplinary medical team.

Duration and Stipend

Program duration is two years.  As these are unionized positions (PIPSC Ontario Medical Physicists), salary, benefits and other employment conditions are stipulated by the collective agreement.

Harold E. Johns Studentship Program

The objective of the Harold E. Johns Studentship Program is to promote interest in the field of medical physics among undergraduate students, and to encourage these students to continue their studies and pursue careers in the field of medical physics in oncology in the Ontario cancer system. Students will contribute to clinical development projects during their term and will have opportunities to gain exposure to the clinical medical physics environment.
