Diagnostic and Interventional Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship Director: Dr. Dyan Flores, MD
Program Administrator: Roula Al-Sharkaoui
Program Objectives:
This program provides advanced subspecialty training in Diagnostic and Interventional Musculoskeletal Radiology at a tertiary academic health sciences center. Fellows gain comprehensive exposure to the full spectrum of musculoskeletal disease, including trauma, oncology, sports medicine, and degenerative and inflammatory conditions.
Training encompasses all major imaging modalities, including radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT, and MRI, as well as a wide range of image-guided musculoskeletal interventions. These include diagnostic and therapeutic joint and spine procedures, arthrograms, aspirations, biopsies, osteoplasties, and radiofrequency ablations.
The program’s objective is to develop highly skilled musculoskeletal radiologists with broad-based clinical expertise, strong procedural competence, and the ability to function independently in academic or advanced community practice settings.
Academic Expectations:
Fellows are expected to actively participate in academic activities alongside their clinical responsibilities. While 80 percent of the fellow's time is spent on clinical services, interpreting imaging studies, performing image-guided procedures, and assisting in the supervision of radiology residents, 20% is dedicated to academic pursuits, including research provided in the form of a protected academic day one day a week on average. Fellows are encouraged to engage in research projects in collaboration with the departments of Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine, with the goal of presentation and/or publication.
Educational opportunities include regular multidisciplinary conferences such as sarcoma and bone tumor boards, rheumatology rounds, orthopedic tumor conferences, and resident musculoskeletal teaching rounds. Dedicated bi-weekly musculoskeletal rounds, attended by fellows and faculty, focus on case discussions, biopsy planning, and journal reviews.
The section is actively involved in national and international professional societies, including the Canadian Society of Skeletal Radiology (CSSR), the Society of Skeletal Radiology (SSR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), and the International Skeletal Society (ISS). Fellows are encouraged to engage with these organizations through abstract submissions and oral presentations, and to attend relevant academic meetings and continuing medical education activities throughout the year.
Program Structure and Call Responsibilities:
This is a one-year (12-month) fellowship based within the Musculoskeletal Imaging section at The Ottawa Hospital, which serves as the core adult teaching hospital for the University of Ottawa. The fellowship provides exposure across three hospital campuses with a diverse balance of emergency, inpatient, and outpatient musculoskeletal imaging.
The clinical workload includes high-volume and complex cases, with annual reporting volumes exceeding 4,000 MRI examinations (excluding spine), 1,200 CT studies, 1,000 ultrasound examinations, and more than 2,000 image-guided musculoskeletal procedures.
Call responsibilities are structured in accordance with departmental fellowship policies and are comparable to those of other Diagnostic Imaging fellows at The Ottawa Hospital. Fellows primarily provide supervisory support to on-call residents, with an emphasis on clinical consultation and case discussion. In addition, fellows may be assigned their equitable share of weekend daytime plain film reporting (approximately 1–2 days per month). Fellows are not assigned first-call evening responsibilities. The Fellowship Program Director will meet formally with fellows on a quarterly basis to review strengths and areas for improvement and to address any outstanding issues raised.
Application Deadline:
Academic Year 2028-2029: Deadline to apply is August 31, 2026. The uOttawa application website will be open from May 1 - August 31, 2026.
