Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming health professions education, research, and care. While enthusiasm is high, many educators and leaders struggle with how to implement AI responsibly and equitably. Backed by rigorous research, the Health CARE-AI (Contextual, Accountable and Responsible Ethics for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare) Framework sets out nine consensus-based principles for responsible AI use across health professions education, research, and care. It provides ethical guidance for using AI in ways that are safe, equitable, transparent, and professional. The Implementation Guide & Toolkit translates those principles into practical actions, structured prompts, and governance strategies for daily practice. This specialized 3-day program will allow you to learn and leverage the CARE-AI Toolkit in assessing your organization’s readiness, barriers, and key priorities for AI use and leave with an actionable, personalized AI implementation plan.

This Fall, OMARI is launching a new OMARI Seminar Series, bringing together researchers, clinicians, medical students, faculty and others interested in the rapidly evolving field of AI in medicine.
Starting on October 14, 2026, the seminar will take place every two weeks on Wednesday afternoons (5 to 7 pm). The series will explore a broad range of topics across medical AI: from traditional machine learning to large language models, from tabular and imaging data to text, and from model development and clinical evaluation to implementation and emerging methods and applications.
The series will begin as a four-session pilot, giving us an opportunity to bring the Ottawa medical AI community together and learn what topics, formats and discussions are most valuable to participants. If there is strong interest, we hope to build on these first sessions and develop the seminar into a continuing forum for exchanging ideas, sharing research and connecting people working at the intersection of AI and medicine. For opening seminar, Prof. Khaled El Emam will introduce the series and Dr. Fida Dankar will join us as our first speaker.

SMASH 2026 is an interdisciplinary gathering focused on putting safe and responsible AI into practice, with particular attention to healthcare and sustainability. Researchers, academics and industry professionals are invited to submit original papers on AI safety, sustainability, healthcare and model accountability. The event brings together experts from across disciplines to advance work in these areas.
