Biography

Prof. Smith’s research focuses on probability theory and computational statistics, with particular interests in Markov chains, Monte Carlo methods, random matrices, embeddings, rankings, and applied data problems.

Current research areas include:

  • Markov chains in statistical physics
  • Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) and related methods in computational statistics
  • Connections between random matrices, embeddings, and ranking systems
