Woman looking through paper hole

Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies

How far have women come? What about efforts to end sexism and racism? What impact do social relationships between women and men have on society? The Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies gives you the knowledge and tools you need to answer these and other questions and help improve the well-being of those who make up more than half the human race.

Welcome to the Institute

Enroll in the numerous courses in Feminist and Gender Studies (FEM), which analyze the position of women and the construction of gender, class, race, sexuality and disability in society.

Benefit from the knowledge and expertise from the IFGS professors and of a large body of professors from various departments, faculties and schools who are engaged in research on gender, class, race, sexuality and disability.

Joint Chair in Feminist and Gender Studies, University of Ottawa and Carleton University

In 1985, the Office of the Secretary of State created a Joint Chair in Women's Studies at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. Four other chairs of women's studies, in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Quebec City and Halifax, were also established under the same program.

Indigenous affirmation

We pay respect to the Algonquin people, who are the traditional guardians of this land. We acknowledge their longstanding relationship with this territory, which remains unceded.

We pay respect to all Indigenous people in this region, from all nations across Canada, who call Ottawa home.

We acknowledge the traditional knowledge keepers, both young and old. And we honour their courageous leaders: past, present, and future.
