Political Science and Juris Doctor: An Accelerated Pathway in French to Two Degrees

The accelerated Political Science and Juris Doctor (J.D.) combined program allows you to combine political analysis and legal education in an integrated six-year pathway. You will develop an in-depth understanding of institutions, power relations and major political issues, while acquiring the knowledge and skills required to practise law.

The first two years are devoted to political science in the Faculty of Social Sciences. You then complete three years of French-language common law studies in the Faculty of Law, before completing your political science studies in your sixth year. At the end of the program, you will earn two distinct degrees: a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Juris Doctor.

The program is offered in French only.

  • Two complementary disciplines. Combine the analysis of political and social issues with rigorous legal training to better understand the mechanisms that shape society and public decision-making.
  • An accelerated pathway. Complete the requirements for both programs in six years rather than pursuing them separately.
  • Diverse career opportunities. Prepare for careers in law, the public service, public affairs, public policy, government relations, international organizations and many other sectors.
  • A strong foundation in political science. Explore issues such as democracy, governance, citizenship, identity, political participation, international relations and global politics.
  • Practice-oriented legal education. The Common Law Section offers training in a wide range of areas, including public and private law, Indigenous law, environmental law, and law and technology, along with opportunities for experiential learning.
  • The advantage of studying at the University of Ottawa. Benefit from a unique environment in the heart of Canada’s national capital, close to Canadian political and legal institutions.
