Students who, at the time of admission, can provide proof of their competence in both languages (e.g., prior post-secondary education in both languages, certificate of linguistic competency) are deemed to meet the language requirement.

All students must meet the second language requirement (English or French) in order to obtain their doctoral degree. The requirements can be met in one of four ways:

  1. successfully completing a graduate course in which all course requirements are met in the second language,
  2. writing the Thesis in the second language, or
  3. completing the Placement test for FLS courses (for students whose first language is English) and receiving a P3 or higher level, orcompleting the Placement test for ESL courses (for students whose first language is French) and receiving a P3 or higher level. Students who are placed at level P3 or higher will be considered to have met the second language requirement, or
  4. completing the Placement test for FLS courses (for students whose first language is English) and, if you receive a level below P3, completing the necessary courses up to FLS2511, orcompleting the Placement test for ESL courses (for students whose first language is French) and, if you receive a level below P3, completing the necessary courses up to ESL2111.

You should note that this is different from the Ph.D. Degree with recognition of Professional Bilingual Competence.
