Explore the diversity of human experiences to better understand social transformations and contribute to more supportive and inclusive communities.

The Joint Honours in Anthropology and Sociology allows you to analyze human societies, their cultures, and their institutions. You will observe how these societies transform and adapt, while developing an understanding of the issues inherent to these changes. By combining the study of intercultural relations, globalization, migration and technology with the study of social inequalities, power, and collective and identity-based behaviours, this program prepares you to understand today’s major issues with rigour and empathy. You will develop research tools to better understand social realities and contribute to concrete change.

Why choose this program

This bidisciplinary program allows you to study societies from two complementary perspectives: anthropology, which focuses on cultural diversity, social practices and lived experiences, and sociology, which examines institutions, norms, social relations and collective transformations. You will learn to analyze issues such as inequality, migration, intercultural relations, gender, poverty, international development, technology, the environment, health, power and identities.

You will develop strong skills in qualitative and quantitative research. This education will help you connect theoretical approaches with real-world realities and better understand the links between individual experiences, community dynamics and major social changes.

At the University of Ottawa, you will study in a stimulating bilingual environment at the crossroads of Francophone, Anglophone and Indigenous traditions. You will also be able to enrich your academic experience through the co-op option, French immersion and experiential learning opportunities. You will be prepared to analyze social realities with nuance and contribute to more inclusive, human and sustainable solutions.
