Get involved outside the classroom

It’s a great way to gain practical experience outside the classroom. Many University of Ottawa student clubs and associations, as well as various UOSU services, are looking for volunteers throughout the year.

For available placements on campus, visit the Community Engagement Navigator (via uoZone) or reach out directly to uOttawa clubs or association that interest you.

Did you know that as a member of a club or association, you can use the Community Engagement Navigator to log your volunteer hours so that they appear on your Co-Curricular Record?

Create your Community Partner account

To have your volunteer hours recognized on your Co-Curricular Record (CCR), your club or association must register on the Community Engagement Navigator.

Before registering your club or association, you will need to designate two members within your team:

Volunteer Coordinator

Creates placements

Approves members’ hours

Supervisor Volunteer Coordinator

Create the Volunteer Coordinator’s placement and approves their hours

Ensures no conflict of interest

Both individuals must create an account as a Community Partner under your club or association. This will allow you to access the Navigator, create placements and manage volunteer hours.

Please note that you cannot approve your own hours. Assigning both roles is required for your club or association to operate properly within the Navigator.

Before creating placements, all clubs and associations must attend a mandatory onboarding session with the Community Engagement Team.

These sessions will guide you through how to use the Community Engagement Navigator, including how to create placements and approve volunteer hours.

Before attending your onboarding session, you must create your account as a Community Partner (see Become Community Partner tab). This ensures that you are ready to follow along and complete the required steps during the session.

Please note that there are blackout periods at the beginning of each term during which services for clubs and associations are limited. During these periods, onboarding sessions are not offered, placement approvals and email responses may be delayed, and requests may be addressed after the blackout period.

Fall: September to October

Winter: January to February

Spring-Summer: May to June

As a member of a club or association, you may have two roles within the Community Engagement Navigator: you are both a student volunteer and a Community Partner.

As a student volunteer, you are responsible for:

Matching yourself to your placement

Logging your volunteer hours in the Navigator so they can appear on your Co-Curricular Record (CCR)

Student volunteers access the Community Engagement Navigator through uoZone.

As a Community Partner, you are responsible for:

Creating placements

Approving volunteer hours

Community Partners access the Community Engagement Navigator through the Community Partner link.

When creating placements, the following criteria must be respected. Placements that do not comply will not be approved.

The placement title must be in both official languages

The academic year must be included in the title

The placement must be set as “open for all students”

The description must clearly indicate who the placement is reserved for

The contact has been onboarded

It is recommended to create one general placement for members with similar roles (for example, executive members) rather than multiple individual placements. Each member should only have one placement per academic year, ensuring they have only one timesheet.
