Ontario Learn and Stay Grant for Medical Education

Ontario continues to invest in growing and strengthening its health care workforce to ensure people can access the care they need, when and where they need it. Building on the success of the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant, the ministry is launching the new Ontario Lean and Stay Grant for Medical Education for the 2026-27 academic year. This new grant program is available to medical residents in postgraduate family medicine residency programs who agree to work as a family doctor in Ontario upon graduation.

Advantages

Through the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant – Medical Education, eligible medical residents will receive funding for the direct educational costs associated with their undergraduate medical education, including tuition, compulsory fees, books and other direct educational costs such as supplies and equipment.

In addition, eligible recipients can get involved in the community and help fill the labour market needs in family medicine.

Eligibility and requirements

The grant is only available to medical students in a postgraduate family medicine residency program at an Ontario medical school. For the full list of requirements including where you can work after you graduate, consult the Ministry of Ontario's web page.

Ontario Learn and Stay Grant for Medical Education

To be eligible for this grant, you must:

Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person
Have completed an undergraduate degree at an Ontario medical school
Be an Ontario resident, as defined by OSAP regulations (you have lived in Ontario for at least 12 consecutive months and have not been enrolled in full-time postsecondary studies during that period).
Hold an appointment as a resident physician and are actively participating in the first year of a two-year postgraduate family medicine residency program at an Ontario medical school
Not be receiving assistance from the Military Medical Training Program or the Medical Officer Training Program
Commit to practicing comprehensive primary care as a family medicine physician anywhere in Ontario for five years.

Required service commitment

You must commit to practicing comprehensive primary care as a family medicine physician anywhere in Ontario for five years. If the terms and conditions of the grant are not met, issued grant funding may be converted into a repayable Ontario Medical Education Loan.

Application details

The Ontario Learn and Stay Grant for Medical Education is administered through OSAP. You must use an OSAP account to apply for the grant; however, you don't have to be a past OSAP recipient to receive the grant.

Users who have previously registered with OSAP will use their existing OAN and password to apply.

New users will complete the same registration process as an OSAP applicant and then proceed to submit their application via their newly created OSAP account.

Applications remain open throughout the two-year residency period. For the 2026-2027 application, the application period began on July 1, 2026 and will end on June 30, 2028. These dates reflect the standard two-year medical residency period and will automatically be reflected on the application after submission.

Medical residents must submit their application no later than 60 days before the end of their two-year postgraduate family medicine residency program.

Supporting documents and requests for review must be received no later than 40 days before the end of their two-year postgraduate family medicine residency program.
