Unified Communications: Safety comes first

The University is currently modernizing its phone system on campus. Most physical phones in offices will be replaced by virtual phones directly in the Microsoft Teams application, while phones in classrooms, research labs, shared offices, emergency phones, blue telephone poles, elevator phones will continue to be available.

The safety and well-being of the University community is paramount and at Information Technology, we realize there are bound to be questions about how users will be able to reach emergency services with the new phone system.

Should an emergency happen, you will be able to call Protection Services or 911 without issue.

To demystify what will happen, any phones that don’t belong directly to a user – a classroom, emergency phone, blue telephone poles, elevators, classrooms, research labs, shared offices, etc. – will see very little change from the current system. Physical phones will remain available in common, public areas. All these existing phones will be replaced by state-of-the-art technology powered by the Bell Canada national infrastructure to support emergency call capabilities required by our institution.  As is the case today, the new phones will be wired with a physical cable and will have one-button access to Protection and emergency services.

For office users who move to Teams, it will be straightforward to get a hold of emergency services, only it will be done directly from your Teams software. We encourage everyone to add Protection Services to their speed dial. Here are several ways to make a call to Protection Services.
