Located in the heart of the National Capital’s entertainment district and surrounded by major museums and art galleries, the University of Ottawa’s Department of Theatre offers a variety of professional, practice-based and theoretical programs.

Our programs

The University of Ottawa’s Department of Theatre offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) program in Theatre Studies (Technical Theatre, History, Playwriting and Drama Education) with Specialization, Major and Minor options, an intensive Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in acting program, a Master of Arts (MA) in Theatre Studies and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Directing.

The Department’s professors, artists and technical staff have access to two buildings which include workshops (set and costume), rehearsal studios and three performance spaces, including the century-old theatre in Academic Hall and the brand new LabO.

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting (BFA)

Our three year program is designed to train professional actors to meet the challenges of today’s theatre. Our graduates are excellent collaborators and proactive artists. They are trained to work on repertoire as well as able to create, produce and perform their own original works.

Graduate: Theatre Directing (MFA)

This innovative program allows you to explore approaches to contemporary directing. Over the course of creating three productions, our students develop their skills across a range of styles, scripts and approaches. This program offers the unique opportunity to study both anglophone and francophone theatre practices in a bilingual and multicultural setting.

Theatre Theory and Dramaturgy (MA)

This two-year graduate program in Theatre Studies allows you to develop and perfect interpretive, critical and scholarly skills, as well as spark the intellectual curiosity required for doctoral studies.
