Use a prerequisite exemption to declare that you have the necessary knowledge to complete a course at the Faculty of Engineering without having successfully completed the prerequisite course.

For various reasons, you may want or need to take courses at another university. If this is the case, you will need to apply for an official Letter of Permission from the University of Ottawa.

If you are a University of Ottawa student enrolled in an undergraduate program and you would like to take courses at Carleton University, you can do so through our exchange agreement with Carleton University.

This is the process to follow to request a course exemption when a course scheduling conflict occurs between two courses.

Some 4000-level courses in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and software engineering require you to submit a project or thesis registration form.

Access the forms to register an undergraduate project or thesis.

Depending on the courses you’ve completed at another postsecondary institution, you may be able eligible for transfer credits that count toward completion of your University of Ottawa program.

If you require proof that you have completed undergraduate studies for employment or a work permit, you may request an attestation of studies from the Faculty of Engineering Academic Office. Note that we can only produce such attestations once the final grades for a given term have been posted.

Please note that an attestation of studies from the Faculty is not an official document.

Once academic standing is considered official, we no longer produce these letters because you can order them directly through your uoZone account.

Document submission: Submit the completed form to [email protected]. 

Students may apply for temporary leave from their program on compassionate, medical, parental or professional grounds.

To submit the request, you will also need to select the leave of absence type and the appropriate subtype, depending on your request.  

When to submit a request for a leave of absence:

• Thesis programs: You must be enrolled for every term, including Spring/Summer term. If not, you must submit a request for leave of absence.  
• Course-based programs: You must enrol in both Fall and Winter terms. If not, you must submit a request for a leave of absence. (For course-based programs, the Spring/Summer term is considered a regularly scheduled break approved by the University. Therefore, you do not need to submit a request for leave of absence for this term if you are enrolled in a course-based program.)

Types of leave of absence:

• Compassionate leave
• Medical leave
• Parental leave
• Professional leave

Documents required:

• Request for leave of absence (PDF, 645 KB)
• Annual Research Progress Report form (PDF, 752 KB) — required for thesis programs only if a report is due before the leave of absence
• Documents relevant to your type of leave (medical note, birth certificate or employment verification letter)
• Additional information about your leave

The Ontario Visiting Graduate Student Agreement (OVGS) allows a registered student in good academic standing to take a course at an Ontario university institution without completing further admission formalities. The requested course must be part of your program requirements.  

Documents required:

• Course outline
• Permission from your supervisor (email or signed) if you are enrolled in a thesis program

When submitting an OVGS request, you must include all required documents in the same service request.

A directed study, also known as a reading course, is a special course set up for a student, on an exceptional basis to further knowledge in a particular area or to gain knowledge in a new area.

To submit a request to enrol in a directed study course, you must submit all the required documents in the same service request.

Documents required:

• Directed Studies/Readings Approval form (PDF, 1.19 MB)
• Syllabus (including grading basis)
• Modification/Cancellation of Enrolment form (PDF, 236 KB)

Under exceptional circumstances, you may request an extension of the time limit to complete your program requirements.

Documents required:

• Request for extension of the time limit to complete the requirements of a graduate degree (PDF, 137 KB)
• Annual Research Progress Report form (PDF, 752 KB) — required for those enrolled in a thesis program
• Letter of support from your supervisor — for those enrolled in a thesis program
• A detailed plan of study (PDF, 750 KB) with clear milestone dates and new timeline to completion
• Graduate enrolment form (PDF, 388 KB)

You must submit all documents in the same service request.

Fast-track your master’s degree into a PhD (if applicable for your program of study).

To request a transfer from master’s with thesis to PhD, you must make sure you meet the minimum requirements. Select your program, then click the Admission requirement tab and look under Fast-track from master’s to PhD.

Add a brief description in the comment box and attach the required documents.

Documents required:

• Copy of uOttawa transcript
• Letter of support from your supervisor attesting that you are capable of transferring to the PhD program and indicating whether funding will be provided (the amount and for how many terms)
• If enrolled in the thesis, fill out the Modification / Cancellation of enrolment (PDF, 236 KB) and add the master’s thesis course (THM 7999) on the left-hand side of the form and the doctoral thesis course (THD 9999) on the right-hand side of the form.

You can enrol in a course and modify your enrolment yourself.  

However, enrolment in some courses may require the assistance of the Academic Office. These changes must be submitted by service request. These include:

• Changes to your course enrolment that you cannot make through uoZone  
• Changes that change your status from auditor (AUD) to regular, or from regular to auditor (AUD)

Documents required:

• Modification / Cancellation of enrolment (PDF, 236 KB)
• To audit a course, you require the approval of the professor teaching the course. 

To request a change of option:

• From course-based to thesis
• From thesis to course-based
• From PhD to master’s  

Add a brief description in the comment box and attach the required documents.

Documents required:

• Modification / Cancellation of enrolment (PDF, 236 KB)
• Proof from your future supervisor saying that they agree to act as your supervisor (if requesting a change to a thesis program)

Only master’s students can request a status change. PhD students need to remain full time.

To submit a request to change status, you must submit the required document by service request.

Note that changing to part-time may affect your scholarships, financial aid, immigration and TA/RA positions. Make sure you understand how a change in status affects your situation.

Thesis-based programs: Before submitting a request, make sure you have completed the course requirements.  

Documents required:

• Modification / Cancellation of enrolment (PDF, 236 KB)
• Letter requesting the change of status, with justification
• Letter from the supervisor supporting this request — for those enrolled in a thesis program

If you have successfully completed a graduate-level course at the University of Ottawa or at any other institution, you may have it recognized as part of your program if you meet the criteria described in Academic regulation C-2.3 Equivalencies and transfer of course units.

In the comment box of your request, please indicate the specific course for which you are seeking equivalency.

Documents required:

• Copy of official transcript
• Course syllabus
• Copies of all assignments
• Copy of the project (if it exists)  
• List of textbooks  
• Copies of exams (if possible)

Note that if these documents are not in either official language, you must provide certified translations into English or French.

This only applies to those not enrolled in a joint program. Students admitted to a joint program must enrol in their courses directly through uoZone.

If you are a University of Ottawa student enrolled in a graduate program and you would like to take courses at Carleton University, you can do so through the exchange agreement with Carleton University.
