A word from the co-directors of the Centre for Research on Health and Nursing

Professors Wendy Gifford and Wendy Peterson

This year, the CRHN held the second biannual Finding Common Ground symposium (in partnership with Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada) for Inuit community members, along with students, researchers, health and social service providers and artists, to network about Inuit-related research priorities. Over 70 participants attended at the Sandy Hill Community Centre, adjacent to Annie Pootoogook Park. The symposium received funding through an OVPR SSHRC Exchange grant.

In November 2022, the CRHN welcomed Zahra Hakimi through the international Scholars at Risk network. The network works to protect scholars suffering grave threats to their lives, liberty and well-being. Zahra is a scholar of medical physiology and midwife. She and her family arrived from Afghanistan.

CRHN co-director Dr. Wendy Gifford (Nursing) and Dr. Pier-Luc Turcotte (Rehabilitation Sciences) are working with the Basic Income Canada Network and researchers across the country on a pan-Canadian basic income guarantee (BIG) forum in May 2024 at uOttawa. In the face of growing health crises and income inequalities, the event seeks to galvanize a social movement and mobilize behind a unified call for BIG across Canada. We’ll bring together researchers, students, policy experts, practitioners, politicians, community activists and the public interested in BIG, to improve social, environmental and economic well-being.
