A word from the director of the LIFE Research Institute

Professor Linda Garcia

The LIFE Research Institute brings together researchers and partners with diverse perspectives working together to understand how we’re guided along the unpredictable pathways of life.

This past year was the final of the founding director’s term. Professor Linda Garcia will be replaced by Professor Nafissa Ismail of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The institute now has 133 members, of which 34% are from the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The LRI focused on networking, creating “hexagons” of inter-related projects around four themes: Preparing your body/self to age (lead: Nafissa Ismail); Ageism and the workplace (lead: Martine Lagacé); Enjoyment as you age (lead: Michael Mulvey); and Transgenerational initiatives (lead: Emmanuel Duplàa). At the LRI’s third AGM, Martine Lagacé facilitated a panel representing different generations, from the Great Generation to Generation Z, on the future of ageing.

The LRI launched Well-Being in Later Life: The Notion of Connected Autonomy, a book initiated and edited by institute members. The institute continues to support and collaborate with all faculties and foster connections between researchers who wouldn’t ordinarily work together. A report on the institute’s first five years should be available shortly.
