2025 External Award Recipients
Dr. Claire Touchie
Dr. Claire Touchie, full professeur in the Department of Medicine, has been awarded a 2025 ASPIRE to excellence – International Collaboration in Health Professions Education award by The International Association for Health Professions Education. This isa prestigious international recognition that celebrates outstanding collaboration in health professions education across institutions, countries, and cultures.
Dr. Alykhan Abdulla
Dr. Alykhan Abdulla, assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine, has been awarded the Medical Post’s 2025 Media Engagement Trailblazer Award in recognition of his use of media and social media to lead change in healthcare at the grassroots level.
Dr. Barbara Vanderhyden
Dr. Barbara Vanderhyden, professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, is the recipient of a Distinguished Service to Cancer Research Award from the Canadian Cancer Research Alliance (CCRA). Dr. Vanderhyden was recognized for her decades-long dedication to public engagement and her work developing and championing novel and inclusive science promotion and education programs for students.
Dr. Rob Beanlands
Dr. Rob Beanlands has received the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology's Distinguished Teacher/Clinician Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions as an educator and clinician in the field of nuclear cardiology.
Dr. Pierre Blier
Dr. Pierre Blier, professor in the departments of Psychiatry and Cellular and Molecular Medicine, has received the 2026 Pioneer Award from The International College of Neuropsychopharmacology for major contributions and international renown in the field of neuropsychopharmacology.
Dr. Dylan Burger
Dr. Dylan Burger, professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, has been awarded the Dr. John B. Dossetor Research Award from the Kidney Foundation of Canada. The national award recognizes impact through innovation, leadership, and dedication in advancing kidney health.
Dr. Ronald Labonté
Dr. Ronald Labonté, professor emeritus at the Faculty’s School of Epidemiology and Public Health, received the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Association for Global Health for devoting his career to advancing health equity and social justice in a globalized world.
PharmD Program administrative staff and faculty members
The PharmD Program administrative staff and faculty members received an impactful team award as part of the Société Santé en français 2024–2025 recognition awards (in French). It honours this team’s outstanding commitment to the development of French-language health care. They earned this accolade for creating the first Doctor of Pharmacy program offered in French.
Dr. Sydney Morin
Dr. Sydney Morin was awarded the Ontario Pharmacists Association’s New Practitioner of the Year Award, which recognizes a pharmacist who has been practicing for no more than five years for their leadership, dedication and passion for the field.
Dr. Peter Liu
Dr. Peter Liu, professor in the Departments of Medicine and Cellular and Molecular Medicine and Chief Scientific Officer of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, which is considered among Canada's highest academic honours and distinguishes Dr. Liu as one of the country's most impactful researchers and scholars in the sciences.
Dr. Mamta Gautman
Dr. Mamta Gautman, assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry, has received the 2025 Chris Carruthers Excellence in Medical Leadership Award from Canadian Journal of Physician Leadership in recognition of her contributions to physician health, leadership development, and healthcare management.
Dr. Rashmi Kothary
Dr. Rashmi Kothary, full Professor in the departments of Medicine, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, and Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Immunology, has been elected as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) in recognition of his outstanding work. The achievement is considered one of the highest distinctions for academics in the health sciences field in Canada.
Dr. Melissa Brouwers
Dr. Melissa Brouwers, professor and director of the School of Epidemiology and Public Health, has been elected as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) in recognition of her outstanding work. The achievement is considered one of the highest distinctions for academics in the health sciences field in Canada.
Dr. Emilio Alarcón
Dr. Emilio Alarcón, associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology, has been named among the 25 most inspiring immigrants in Canada of 2025 from Canadian Immigrant. These awards are presented annually to immigrants who have helped shape the country through their community engagement, cultural or scientific impact, and leadership. Dr. Jodi Edwards, associate professor at the School of Epidemiology and Public Health and scientist at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, has earned the 2024 Early Career Researcher of the Year Award presented by uOttawa’s Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation.
Dr. Talal Al-Atassi
Dr. Talal Al-Atassi, assistant dean of Postgraduate Medical Education and director of the Cardiac Surgery Residency Program in the Department of Surgery, has been named one of the Ottawa Business Journal and Ottawa Board of Trade’s Forty Under 40 award recipients.

Dr. James Downar, professor in the Department of Medicine, was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for his contributions to hospice and palliative care in Canada.

Dr. Lynne Leonard
Dr. Lynne Leonard, adjunct professor at the School of Epidemiology and Public Health, has been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of her significant role in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Canada.

Dr. Alykhan Abdulla, assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine, has been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal.
Dr. Shawn Aaron
Dr. Shawn Aaron, Professor in the Department of Medicine and in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health, has been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal in recognition of his work to improve the diagnosis, treatment and management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and cystic fibrosis in Canada. Dr. Aaron created the Canadian Respiratory Research Network, which brings together the respiratory research community, enhances training opportunities and encourages research in Canada.
Dr. Deborah Siegal
Dr. Deborah Siegal, associate professor in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health and the Department of Medicine, has been awarded the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation’s (CSCI) 2025 Joe Doup Young Investigator Award, for her work in addressing anti-coagulant-related bleeding, preventing strokes in cancer patients, and reducing blood clots in in critically ill patients.
Dr. Christine Landry
Dr. Christine Landry, director of the Undergraduate Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) and Accreditation, and clinical pharmacist at Hôpital Montfort, has been awarded the Association des communautés francophones d’Ottawa (ACFO Ottawa)’s Intervenante en santé de l’année (Health Worker of the Year) award.
Dr. Jerry Maniate
Dr. Jerry Maniate, Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Innovation in Medical Education (DIME), has received the Canadian Association for Medical Education (CAME) Mid-Career Achievement Award2025. This award recognizes a mid-career CAME member who demonstrates a continued pattern of meaningful contribution to medical education.
