NEW OFFERING!

Flip it!: Practical strategies for effective flipped classroom teaching

First workshop July 9, 2026 from 10am-12pm. Space is limited, email [email protected] to inquire. Additional sessions will be offered throughout the calendar year.

Session Description:
This interactive faculty development workshop will prepare educators to effectively design and facilitate flipped classroom sessions. As part of ongoing curricular renewal efforts informed by best educational practices across disciplines and stages of training, a growing proportion of learning material is being delivered through asynchronous preparatory modules, allowing in-person classroom time to focus on application, clinical reasoning, and integration.

In this workshop, participants will explore the pedagogical principles underlying flipped learning, familiarize themselves with practical strategies to develop and facilitate high-engagement sessions, and discuss common challenges in implementation. The workshop will emphasize active learning techniques, learner accountability, and strategies to move beyond didactic teaching toward meaningful knowledge application.

Participants will be encouraged to bring a current or upcoming teaching “project” (e.g., a session they are planning to facilitate). A key outcome of the workshop will be the development of a draft lesson plan aligned with flipped classroom principles that can be directly implemented in their own teaching.

This session is relevant to all faculty members interested in active learning strategies and will be particularly valuable for those facilitating small- or large-group teaching.

Learning Objectives - By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the core principles and evidence base supporting flipped classroom pedagogy.
  2. Differentiate between traditional lecture-based and flipped learning approaches in medical education.
  3. Apply practical strategies to facilitate interactive, learner-centered in-person sessions.
  4. Identify common challenges in flipped classroom implementation and propose solutions.
  5. Design or adapt a teaching session to align with flipped classroom principles.
