EDI Seminar Series
Leaders of Colour in Multicultural Canada
Date:
May 22, 2025
Time:
12:00 – 1:00
Location:
Zoom
The Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion is pleased to welcome speaker Joseph Wong, Vice President, International, at the University of Toronto & Professor at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy, who will present his seminar “Leaders of Colour in Multicultural Canada”
This seminar will present his own personal experiences – from growing up in Brampton during the 1980s to becoming the sole leader of colour (at the time) in the UofT’s executive leadership group – Joseph Wong offers reflections on the leadership challenges and opportunities that come with being a racialized minority in multicultural Canada. In addition, he will recount insights he has gained through discussions with other senior leaders about their experiences. Professor Wong believes deeply that leaders of color and their impact must go beyond their ‘representativeness’ at leadership tables. Leaders of color must use their voice to expand the discursive space within which progressive ideas may emerge.
The objective of this session will be:
- Identify approaches to contributing meaningfully to equity and inclusion efforts beyond symbolic representation.
- Analyze how focusing on cultural impact, rather than cultural ‘fit,’ can influence organizational dynamics and decision-making.
- Reflect on personal and collective experiences as tools to broaden conversations, challenge dominant perspectives, and foster innovative thinking in professional environments.
Register for the session on Zoom.
