General Objectives

This program provides advanced training in body computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, abdominal procedures including FNA and core needles biopsy as well as fluid drainages, and some limited exposure to gastrointestinal and genitourinary fluoroscopy. The aim of the program is to develop subspecialty radiologists with broad-spectrum expertise in abdominal imaging.

80 percent of the fellow's time is spent on clinical services, interpreting imaging studies, performing image-guided biopsies and aspirations, and assisting in the supervision of radiology residents. Twenty per cent of their time is dedicated to academic pursuits, including research provided in the form of an academic day once a week on average. Dedicated conferences that contribute to fellow education include daily clinical assignments, noon teaching conferences, weekly fellow conferences, weekly multidisciplinary conferences, monthly follow-up conferences, and fellow discussion groups for interesting cases. Residents are also able to attend a spectrum of advanced CME courses provided by the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Radiology as well as visiting professor programs offered throughout the academic year.

Specific Objectives

The fellow is expected to:

• Perform independently and act as a useful abdominal imaging consultant to clinicians in Ultrasound, CT, MRI, and special procedures
• Perform and interpret non-contrast and contrast enhanced CT scans of the abdomen and pelvis for various indications including lesion characterization, staging malignancies, trauma, abdominal pain, etc.
• Perform and interpret ultrasound examinations:
  • Of the abdomen, pelvis, small parts (incl. thyroid gland, testicles), bowel and joints (incl. shoulders) using conventional probes
  • Of the female pelvis, the rectum, the prostate and intra-operative cases using special probes.
• Supervise MRI examination and
  • Assess for absolute and relative contraindications
  • Protocol each case appropriately
  • Perform conjoint procedures such as rectal jelly administration and buscopan administration
  • Supervise technical adequacy and completeness of cases at the technologist’s request
• Perform and interpret MRI examinations of abdomen, pelvis, and vessels
• Perform ultrasound-guided, fluoroscopic-guided, and CT-guided fine-needle aspiration and core biopsies as well as drainage catheter insertions
• Perform fluoroscopic procedures with barium and feeding tube insertions
• Assess and treat patients having an anaphylactic reaction or an adverse side effect from any supervised procedure
• Teach residents and medical students as part of their daily assigned duties
• Perform and interpret examinations performed on-call
• Prepare abdominal imaging rounds once a month
• Attend all abdominal imaging rounds within the department as well as multidisciplinary rounds related to body imaging
• Attend a full weekly series of lectures prepared specifically for trainees at the fellowship level of expertise

Structure

This is a 12-month fellowship. No split or divided fellowships are offered. Fellows’ schedules will be created on a monthly basis by the abdominal imaging fellowship program director and the scheduling coordinator.

Fellows’ schedules will vary daily, with approximately one day spent in each of the following areas:

1. Ultrasound
2. CT
3. MRI
4. Special procedures (biopsies, drainages)
5. Evening plain film reporting (one to two days per month )

Fellows will participate in the call roster performing call supervision.

The Fellowship Director will formally meet with fellows every quarter to discuss their strengths and weaknesses and address any outstanding issues brought forth.

Fellows will also participate in call duty at a rate no greater than other fellows in The Ottawa Hospital Fellowship Programs in the department of Diagnostic Imaging. Calls involve supervision of on-call residents from the residency training program. This takes place primarily from home through internet connection to the PACS system to discuss cases of concern initiated by the resident. No first call responsibilities are assigned to fellows.

Interventional Radiology Fellowship Director: Dr. Stephen Ryan, MD, PhD, FRCPC

General Objectives

This is a one-year fellowship in angiography & interventional radiology.

Fellows will have already passed the FRCP examination in Diagnostic Radiology or equivalent. The purpose of the fellowship is to obtain further experience and training in angiography and interventional radiology.

Specific Objectives

• To become familiar with the indications for, performance, risks, and interpretation of a broad range of diagnostic angiography. This will not include coronary angiography.

• To become familiar with the performance and care of a patient during various types of thrombolytic therapy.
• To become expert in the indications for, performance of, and postoperative management of patients requiring balloon angioplasty with or without stenting. This will predominantly include treatment of the aorta, iliac arteries, femoral arteries and renal arteries with limited exposure to other sites.
• To become expert in a broad range of other procedures including percutaneous nephrostomy, biliary drainage, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunting and abdominal abscess drainage. There will also be exposure to various solid organ biopsies, percutaneous ethanol treatment of liver tumors, percutaneous gastrostomy, esophageal stenting.
• Depending on the interest of the candidate, it may be possible to provide considerable experience in lung biopsy and pleural interventions.
• Some elective time in pediatric interventional radiology, neuro angiography and duplex Doppler ultrasound can also be arranged subject to the interest of the candidate

Structure of the Fellowship

• Hands-on training in general angiography and interventional radiology.
• Elective time set out as follows: First three months direct supervision; second three months limited supervision; the last six months function as a junior staff. Elective time includes chest interventional radiology, duplex ultrasound and neuro angiography.

Evaluation Process

This will occur by direct observation of the fellow by the supervising staff radiologists, all of whom have extensive experience.

Formal three-month evaluations will occur with the fellowship program director. There is no formal examination at the end of the fellowship. Successful completion of the fellowship program will be indicated by a certificate from the University of Ottawa.

This fellowship program is registered with the Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology. It is our understanding that candidates who have completed this fellowship will be eligible to take the CIQ examination of the American Board of Radiology.

Objectives

To acquire experience and expertise in the following areas:

• Imaging work-up of screen-detected mammographic abnormalities in the setting of a dedicated breast assessment centre

• The imaging work-up of patients presenting with clinical breast problems

• Breast ultrasound in the characterization of focal breast lesions and in the staging of breast cancer

• Targeted breast ultrasound in the assessment of MR-detected abnormalities

• Stereotactic and ultrasound guided core-needle and vacuum-assisted breast biopsy

• Pre-operative needle/wire localization of breast lesions

• Screening mammography

• Imaging-pathologic correlation

• Interpretation of breast MR studies

• Performing MRI guided breast biopsies

Academic Duties

• Participation in weekly Breast Health Centre (BHC) clinical rounds (Monday noon) – presentation and discussion of imaging studies

• Participation in weekly breast site group oncology rounds ORCC General campus (Tuesday am)

• Participation in monthly resident breast topic presentations at the BHC

• Participation in monthly breast imagers interesting case rounds at the BHC

• Participation in monthly ultrasound technologist rounds at the BHC

• Presentation of one breast imaging rounds (ie interesting breast cases) per month at noon rounds for the radiology residents

Cardiac Radiology Fellowship Director: Dr. Anuj Dixit, MD, FRCPC

Objectives:

1. To develop a detailed knowledge of cardiac anatomy, cardiac hemodynamics, exercise physiology, standard cardiovascular pharmacology, echocardiography and rest and stress electrocardiography

2. To develop the ability to protocol, supervise and interpret cardiac CT and cardiac MR

3. To develop a detailed working knowledge of the 3D workstations used in conjunction with the scanners

4. To demonstrate the ability to teach the technologists, residents, medical students and other staff

5. To participate in daily/weekly, monthly work rounds

6. To develop and complete at least one research project, present at one (or more) national or international meeting (s) and to publish at least one paper in a peer-reviewed journal

The successful candidate will also be required to observe a minimum of 50 coronary angiograms with CTA correlation as well as participate in the interpretation of these.  The candidate will also be required to complete the ACLS course in order to deal with the possible complications of the drugs administered for Cardiac CT and to deal with possible anaphylactic reactions to intravenous contrast administration.

Weekly Schedule:

The candidate will spend 2 days per week in Cardiac CT and one day in Cardiac MR. One day per week will be dedicated to research.  The candidate will spend one day per week in Thoracic Radiology.

Assessment will be ongoing with the training supervisors and a formal evaluation will be provided every 3 months.

General Objectives:

To solidify and expand knowledge and skills in various aspects of cardiothoracic imaging, to gain academic insight into diagnosis of both common and less common types of cardiothoracic pathology and to acquire expert skills in examinations and image guided procedures. The successful fellow should be able to practice in either an academic or community radiology practice following fellowship training.

Specific Objectives:

The fellow is expected to:

• perform independently and act as a cardiothoracic imaging consultant to clinicians in cardiothoracic radiography, chest and cardiac CT, MRI and image guided invasive procedures

• protocol and interpret cardiothoracic imaging scans for various indications including lesion characterization, staging malignancies, trauma, and diffuse interstitial lung diseases. Additionally, the fellow will develop the ability to protocol, supervise and interpret cardiac CT, cardiac MR and CT and MR aortic imaging studies, including adult congenital heart disease and TAVI aortograms.

• perform fluoroscopic-guided and CT-guided fine-needle aspiration and core biopsies as well as percutaneous pleural drainage under US guidance and also treat post-procedural complications such as pneumothorax.

• develop a detailed knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy and acquired and congenital cardiac pathology.

• develop a working knowledge of cardiac hemodynamics.

• develop a detailed working knowledge of several 3D workstations used in conjunction with the scanners

• demonstrate the ability to teach technologists, residents and medical students as part of their daily assigned duties

• prepare and attend multidisciplinary cardiac and thoracic imaging rounds

• gain experience in research in Radiology through participation in at least one or two  research projects which includes presentation at our Annual Research Day, as well as publication in a scientific journal and/or presentation at a national or international conference

Structure

This is a 12-month clinical fellowship dedicated to Cardiothoracic Imaging. The schedule will vary with six months spent in cardiac imaging and six months is chest radiology, as detailled below:

1. Thoracic CT and MRI – fellows are expected to read all STAT and high-priority CT cases performed at the General and Riverside Campuses or at the Civic Campus before 5pm. When no priority cases are left the fellow is expected to read routine outpatient chest CTs from all campuses read from oldest to most recent. The fellow is also expected to read all thoracic MRI’s. All cases should be discussed with the staff assigned to CT. All cases reviewed that day are to be dictated prior to leaving the hospital. There will be graded responsibility with the fellow able to dictate cases they feel comfortable with without reviewing with staff depending on assessment of fellow competence.

2. Procedures and ICU chest radiographs – fellows are expected to review the cases and prior imaging studies of all biopsy patients for biopsy planning, obtain the informed consent prior to the procedure, perform the procedure under supervision, read the post-procedure chest radiograph, assess and manage post procedure complications under supervision, discharge the patient and issue a procedure report.  In between biopsies, the fellow is expected to read the ICU radiographs, followed by high-priority and then routine radiographs. All procedures and radiographs need to be dictated prior to leaving the hospital.  All ICU and high-priority chest radiographs at the assigned campus need to be dictated prior to leaving the hospital.

3. Cardiac Radiology – fellows will read Cardiac CT angiogram and cardiac MR as well as aortic CT and aortic MR studies at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. All cross-sectional examinations will be reviewed with staff assigned to Cardiac Imaging that day  and dictated before leaving that day. Fellows will also be expected to dictate the chest radiographs performed at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute every day. There will be graded responsibility for chest radiographs and these will be dictated by the fellow without reviewing with staff depending on fellow competence. All chest radiographs and all STAT and high priority thoracic cross-sectional imaging will be dictated by the end of each day.  Fellows will be expected to actively supervise all cardiac CT examinations and MRI’s performed including fielding all questions from technologists and nurses. They will be also expected to dictate and reconstruct TAVI CT aortogram cases.

4. Fellows will be actively involved in protocoling cardiac and cardiothoracic CT’s and MRI’s as well interventional chest procedure with staff supervision.

5. Fellows will be granted an Academic Day once a week that should be used for research projects or preparation of rounds and lectures. The fellows are expected to be in the hospital from 8am to 5pm unless otherwise arranged with the Fellowship Director (see below).

The program director will formally meet with the fellows every two months to discuss the fellow’s strengths and weaknesses and address any outstanding issues brought forth by the fellow.

Evening shift

All fellows hired by OHRIA with the exception of Interventional Fellows, and Neuro-Interventional fellows will participate in an evening shift 2 to 4 times per month.  The fellows are expected to be on-site from 5 -11 pm at the General Campus.  During this time the primary responsibilities of the fellow include:

1. Reporting of at least 50 outpatient plain films, tri-campus or CTs as agreed with fellowship director. The exams are assigned to the staff covering chest radiographs the following day at the General campus. If there are less than 50 exams tri-campus or if agreed with the staff, the fellow can report cases from their respective specialty (e.g. chest/aortic CTs).

2. Injection coverage for out-patient MRI and out-patient CT cases at the General campus. This responsibility requires prompt presence of the fellow on site at 5 pm.

3. Support onsite the radiology resident if needed.  The resident will be directly supervised by the staff radiologist onsite at the Civic Hospital so need for supervision will be exceptional.

Call

Fellows in cardiothoracic Imaging will be assigned to weekend reporting call along with a staff member. Duties will be shared and include reading of all plain films STAT and high-priority performed. Fellows must be on-site Saturday and Sunday for reporting as specified in the Departmental policy.  They should report 35 plain films in the morning and 35 plain films in the afternoon and send it to the staff covering plain films morning and the staff covering plain films in the evening. Time and assigned duties may be discussed in advance with the staff on call.

Education by Cardiothoracic Imaging Staff

Teaching is a vital part of the fellowship. Teaching includes daily review and discussion of cases and procedures with the assigned staff. For each rotation the fellow will be working with a chest or cardiac radiologist who will be on-site and available for discussion and teaching at any time.

The fellows will have dedicated formal teaching Tuesdays at noon for Cardiac Radiology (interesting cases rounds) and Mondays at 4:00 PM for Thoracic Radiology, including lectures, review of articles, review of teaching files and case-based rounds, given by one of the radiologists or fellows (in Cardiac), invited chest pathologists or respirologists or cardiac surgerons. Fellows are encouraged to attend resident noon rounds and multidisciplinary rounds and lectures in cardiac and chest imaging.

Rounds

Rounds are a vital part of the department and the learning experience afforded to trainees at academic centers.  Fellows are expected to participate in these events.  Rounds include:

• Chest Radiology-Pathology Rounds (“Pizza Rounds”) – alternate Fridays at noon. Presentation of 3 to 4 cases by the fellow in Thoracic Imaging, with discussion of pathological findings by a thoracic pathologist and thoracic surgeon.

• Respirology-Radiology Rounds (“R&R Rounds) – once a month Tuesdays at noon. Rounds presented in conjunction with a Respirology staff who presents the clinical history followed by presentation of radiological findings by the fellow in Thoracic Imaging.

• Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Conference and Thoracic Clinical Trials Research Conference - every Friday morning, from 8:00 to 9:00 am. Presented by a staff chest radiologist for discussion and management decision with medical and radiation oncologists, thoracic pathologists and thoracic surgeons.

• ILD Rounds – presented by Dr. Souza and the multidisciplinary ILD team for discussion of cases from the Respirology ward on Wednesdays.

• Grand Rounds – are held every month and feature presentations by third year residents, interdivisional fellows and staff or visiting professors.  All fellows are expected to present one Grand Rounds lecture in the second half of the fellowship year.  The topic of the rounds is open to areas of personal consideration, under the guidance of a self chosen staff preceptor in the Cardiothoracic imaging.

• Pathology Rounds (M&M Rounds) – presented once a month by one of the radiology residents, including errors and misdiagnosis in cases seen in the daily practice.

• Thoracic Pathology Meeting – presented at noon by a Thoracic Radiologist and Dr. Marcio Gomes, Thoracic Pathologist in the Pathology Department, each time a specific topic is discussed with clinical-radiological-pathological correlation, with emphasis on pathological findings.

• Congenital Cardiac Rounds – these are multidisciplinary rounds held on Mondays once a month from 5:00 until 6:30 PM. Cases are presented by a staff Cardiothoracic radiologist and management is discussed with cardiologists and cardiac surgeons. Fellows are expected to attend.

• Cardiac Imaging Rounds – held every Wednesday at noon at the Heart Institute.  Fellows will be expected to present a topic once or twice a year.  Fellows will be expected to attend the week they rotate in Cardiac Radiology

• Cardiac Imaging and MR interesting cases rounds-Held every Tuesday at noon at the HI. Fellows will be expected to present a topic several times a year.

• TAVI rounds: Every Thursday at 7,30 am. Fellows are expected to attend these multidisciplinary rounds while on their cardiac rotation.

CME Course  

The Ottawa Hospital Department of Radiology has initiated an intense CME program that is well-known throughout North America.

Fellows can attend these events.  Many events are held regionally but outside of the city and require travel arrangements at the fellows own expense.  Time for participation is deducted from the allotted conference leave noted above. Most of the events occur on weekends so limited allotted time would be required.

ACLS Course

This is highly recommended in order to deal with complications resulting from thoracic interventional procedures and adverse events resulting from premedication used for cardiac CT  and cardiac MR as well as contrast reactions.

Academic Time and Research

One day a week will be provided to each fellow for academic and research activities.  This is a large block of time on an annual basis during which time the fellow will have to develop research experience. This time is protected for fellows to have the opportunity to maximize the advantage of working at an academic institution to develop research skills and experience by participating in a project.  At the beginning of the year fellows will be introduced to projects being developed in the department for review or consideration.  Academic time will not be provided for fellows not involved in a research project.

Ideally projects chosen will be able to be completed within the year as a fellow, and provide the opportunity to fellows to present information at a conference or lead to a publication. All fellows are expected to present their work at the Annual Radiology Department Research Day held in June of each year.

In weeks where an evening shift is assigned, fellows assigned to the evening shift will receive their academic day on the same day.

ER & Trauma Fellowship Director: Dr. Blair Macdonald, MD, FRCPC

Overview

The Emergency Radiology Fellowship is designed for the radiologists seeking to become expert consultants in emergency/trauma radiology to trauma and general surgeons as well as to emergency physicians. This dedicated academic emergency radiology division covers all emergency department CT (except head CT), Ultrasound (body and vascular), and radiographs. The program is designed to improve the fellow's expertise in developing appropriate strategies for imaging trauma-related problems and to expose the fellow to a large number of varied cases. The majority of the training is spent in clinical imaging, side-by-side with the staff radiologist and radiology residents.

One or two positions in Trauma / ER Imaging is offered as a one-year fellowship which begin either July 1st of each year; under special circumstances, a shorter period may be considered. Prior completion of an accredited residency program in diagnostic radiology is required.

The ER fellowship consists of four clinical shifts per week in Emergency Radiology and one day per week for research. Fellows are also encouraged and supported to pursue any research activity that is of interest to them. The staff radiologists provide guidance and assistance in all phases of the research projects. The fellows are provided with office space, office supplies, administrative help for the conduct of research projects as well as facilities for literature searches, editing, statistical tabulation and biomedical photography. Fellows are encouraged to produce a publication during the fellowship year.

Educational Goals and Objectives

The primary general educational objective of the Division of Emergency Radiology is to educate diagnostic radiology residents and emergency radiology fellows on the radiological evaluation of the traumatized and acutely ill patient. Though many protocols used for routine outpatient exams are similar to those employed in Emergency Radiology, there are variations on protocols that prove useful in the Emergency Department patient population. Additionally, there are unique referral patterns and triage concerns that deserve special consideration when coordinating the imaging of these patients. Specific objectives include:

• Learn basic and tailored CT protocols for the most common pathologic entities seen in emergency radiology (e.g. appendicitis, diverticulitis). Learn advanced CT imaging protocols unique to emergency radiology (e.g. CT cystography for traumatic bladder rupture).

• Acquire advanced skills in the imaging and management of acutely ill and traumatized patients.
• Learn and/or refine ultrasound skills in the assessment for cholecystitis and biliary disease, testicular torsion and epididymo-orchitis, lower and upper extremity vascular ultrasound for clot evaluation, assessment for fluid in the setting of trauma, paracentesis, thoracentesis and ruptured AAA.
• Develop skills for critically reviewing and providing instruction to residents. Participate in the education of residents and medical students.

Overall Goals of the Program

This program provides one (or two) years of training in Interventional Neuroradiology. On successful completion, the physician will have the necessary skills to maintain a consulting practice in neuro-interventional radiology.

The training will be clinical (minimum of 12 months) but will also provide training and experience in research (up to one research day per week).

Program objectives are to develop an interventional neuroradiologist who:

• Has clinical competence in the field of interventional neuroradiology, with expertise in performing diagnostic and interventional neuroradiological procedures. He/she will be able to:

  • Interpret multi-modality neurovascular imaging (CTA, MRA, DSA)

  • Post-process and interpret therapeutic neuro-interventional procedures (coiling, embolization, puncture, nerve block, vertebroplasty, etc.)
  • Serve as a consultant to general practitioners and other specialists such as neurologists, neurosurgeons, head and neck surgeons, spins surgeons, oncologists, physiatrists, anesthesiologists and ophthalmologists.
  • Arrange for supervising and performing complex diagnostic procedures in the sub-specialty.
  • Organise and supervise the pre- and post-operative care of patients treated for neuro-interventional diseases.
• Has the ability to develop and carry out clinical or basic science research projects in the field of interventional neuroradiology, although it is not expected that the trainee will have the skills to conduct independent sophisticated research on completion of the one- or two-year program.
• Has interest and ability to teach interventional neuroradiology to undergraduates, postgraduates and colleagues

Year 1

Assuming the trainee is, at the beginning of the program, sufficiently skilled in performing independently the majority of the diagnostic vascular/spinal procedures (for instance, diagnostic cerebral angiography, lumbar puncture, CT-guided biopsy), and following a few weeks of adaptation to the routine of the local supervisors, the first year clinical fellow will focus on performing, under supervision, diagnostic cerebral angiographies, diagnostic spinal angiographies, fluoroscopy-guided procedures (spinal, cranial), and on provided first assist in the coiling, embolization, or stenting of head/neck/spinal vascular conditions, tumors or mass lesions. He/she will learn the indications and technique for performing lumbar puncture, myelography, bone and soft tissue biopsies of the spine, and head and neck. Of note, procedures that are not listed in this document, but can potentially be performed by a neuro-interventionalist, may be added to the skill set during the course of the year to ensure an up-to-date training.

The clinical fellow will assess patients in clinic as well as in-patients at the hospital, prior to and after the procedure(s). He/she will be responsible for verifying the initial results of a variety of tests performed prior to a procedure being booked. The fellow will review the case with the supervising staff and ensure that the appropriate post-operative care is negotiated with the interested parts, including the family of the patients. He/she will function as an important liaison between the supervisor and the family. The trainee will learn indications for, and the appropriate technique of, the aforementioned procedures, and will learn to obtain an informed consent, and to lead pre- and post-procedure care. He/she will be responsible to train the junior diagnostic neuroradiology fellows in performing diagnostic cerebral angiography, diagnostic spinal angiography and other fluoroscopy and CT guided procedures.

Towards the second half of this first year, and depending on the trainee’s ability and learning curve, he/she will be encouraged to take on the lead as first operator on most of the cases, once again under the assistance of a supervisor who will passively guide him/her. The trainee will be encouraged to perform clinical research. Initial projects would include a case report or case series, depending essentially on the level of preparedness of the trainee.

Year 2

This year is offered when the trainee starts the first year of the program at the level of training that requires him/her to learn the basic techniques of catheter and/or needle manipulation in the first year. The second year clinical fellow will continue focus on the aforementioned activities of the first year, in addition to becoming the first operator in most of the procedures that the training program offers. General Objectives

The uOttawa Faculty of Medicine and The Ottawa Hospital’s Department of Diagnostic Imaging, offer a one-year fellowship in Musculoskeletal Imaging. The musculoskeletal section consists of three dedicated fellowship trained Musculoskeletal faculty serving the three campuses of The Ottawa Hospital, the core adult teaching hospital for the University of Ottawa. The Ottawa Hospital is a level 1 trauma, tertiary, academic health sciences centre with 1,000 beds and performs over 360,000 diagnostic imaging studies per year. The Ottawa Hospital is partnered with the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre and The Rehabilitation Centre of Eastern Ontario which are major tertiary referral centres for Eastern Ontario.

The service provides consultations for the full spectrum of musculoskeletal disease including trauma, oncology, sports medicine, and arthritic processes. All imaging modalities are available including radiography (all digital), fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT and MR. A wide range of image-guided interventional procedures are performed including biopsies, aspirations, arthrograms, spine injections, vertebroplasty, and RF ablation. The practice is diverse with a balance of emergency, in-patient and out-patient cases.

The most interesting and complex cases from Eastern Ontario are funneled into The Ottawa Hospital. On a yearly basis, the MSK section reads 4,000 MRI (excluding spine), 800 CT, 800 US cases and performs over 1,500 procedures. There is a large volume of radiographs including ER, orthopedic, and rheumatology cases.

There are ample opportunities to participate in multidisciplinary sarcoma and bone tumour conferences, rheumatology, and resident MSK rounds. There are several other orthopedic tumor and grand rounds that the fellow is encouraged to attend. Bi-weekly MSK rounds, exclusively for the fellow and MSK staff, will allow for discussion of interesting cases, biopsy planning, and journal reviews.

All MSK radiologists are currently involved with research in collaboration with the departments of Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine. The fellow would be expected to participate in research, and weekly protected academic time will be provided to support this.

Neuroradiology subspecialty training program is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is considered as a residency program.

General Objectives

To develop clinical and academic expertise in both diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology.

• To develop expertise in the performance and interpretation of advanced MRI techniques, including, but not limited to, diffusion and perfusion imaging, functional MRI, and MR Spectroscopy

• To help to develop new indications for advanced neuroimaging techniques, including, but not limited to, functional MRI and MR Spectroscopy
• To refine and further develop expertise in the performance and interpretation of computed tomography scans of the brain, head and neck, and spine
• To refine and further develop expertise in the performance and interpretation of myelograms
• To further develop and refine skills with respect to the indications, risks and benefits, and performance of diagnostic neuroangiography
• To develop skills and gain experience in the performance of intracranial, interventional neuroradiologic procedures, including, but not limited to, treatment of aneurysms with GDC coils, angioplasty, thrombolysis, and balloon occlusions
• To contribute to and develop expertise in neuroradiology research initiatives

Structure

• A two-year subspecialty residency
• The resident will rotate through MRI, CT, Myelography, and angiography at both the Civic and the General campuses. His/her time will be divided approximately equally through each of these modalities
• Protected academic time will be provided when necessary to support research initiatives

Evaluation Process

Ongoing evaluation of the candidate will occur by direct observation as well as by oral and OSCE examination and Review of evaluations conducted at regular intervals with the fellowship program director.

Thoracic Pathology

• To acquire a basic knowledge of the cytological and pathological differences between the different types of lung cancer.
• To gain an understanding of the different types of pathology specimens required to make the different pathological diagnoses.

Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery

• To gain an understanding of the key elements needed in a radiology report to guide the thoracic and cardiac surgeons in the operating room.
• To gain practical knowledge of thoracic and cardiac surgical anatomy in the operating room.

Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Rounds

To actively participate in the weekly Thoracic Work Rounds, including interpretation of the cases, to gain an understanding of the multidisciplinary approach to thoracic oncologic diseases.

Thoracic Clinical Pathologic Conferences

To assist in the selection of cases, preparation of images and presentation of these bi-weekly rounds.

Thoracic Radiology Research

To complete two research projects, at least one of which should end up as a publication in a peer-reviewed journal and be presented at a national or international conference. It would be desirable to have a paper accepted for presentation at the Society of Thoracic Radiology meeting (STR).

Effective Consultant

To become an expert consultant in Thoracic Radiology to Thoracic, Cardiac and General surgeons as well as Internists, Respirologists, Infectious Disease Specialists and Family Practitioners as well as Radiology Technicians.

Clinical Duties

To become proficient in performing the daily activities of a Thoracic Radiologist such reading plain films on in and outpatients, ICU films and CT scans and performing all lung biopsies and chest drainages.

Teaching

To teach the medical students and residents in Diagnostic Radiology or doing electives in Radiology on a daily basis. This will include presentation of noon-hour teaching rounds for the radiology residents once every two weeks.
