You’ll thrive living in the heart of Canada’s capital as you study at the University of Ottawa, the only university campus located in the downtown core. The city’s warm, easygoing yet dynamic vibe stems from its highly multicultural mix of people and spirit of openness. With the historic sandstone Parliament Buildings and a diverse mix of urban villages, it’s an ideal setting for learning.
Ottawa living
Big city energy, small town soul.
A city of many faces, open to different lifestyles
- The downtown skyline features the sleek glass towers of an innovation zone that’s a powerhouse for jobs in public policy and with major tech players like Shopify, SurveyMonkey, Thales and Accenture.
- One in four residents was born outside Canada, creating a cultural mosaic that sparks imaginations.
- Niche neighborhoods include the quaint and quiet Sandy Hill (right next to campus), Chinatown, Little Italy, the Glebe, the up-and-coming artsy Hintonburg and many more — you don’t have to travel far for a new perspective.

A connected campus
Thanks to the City of Ottawa’s major investments in public transportation, uOttawa boasts a light rail station right on campus. The uOttawa station is on OC Transpo’s east-west Confederation Line, part of the largest transportation infrastructure project in Ottawa since the building of the Rideau Canal. In a few minutes, you can be shopping at the Rideau Centre or on the University’s own Lees campus.
Breathe in the open air
The University of Ottawa’s ideal location allows you to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities. In summer, try whitewater rafting on the Ottawa River, or bungee jumping, kayaking or canoeing on crystal-clear lakes — or just chill on a nearby beach. The National Capital Region has over 600 kilometres of cycling paths and scenic Gatineau Park has 165 kilometres of hiking trails. In winter, you can skate on the Rideau Canal, the world’s largest skating rink and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Our neighbour, Quebec
A world of Quebecois culture is a mere stone’s throw from the downtown core on the other side of the Ottawa River. Walk or cycle across the Alexandra Bridge and explore Gatineau and the wider Outaouais region, part of la belle province. It’s a great way to practise your French and experience the joie de vivre that drives this area of the country. From the wild nature of Gatineau Park to the nightlife in Hull, expand your horizons and get the best of both worlds across the interconnected Ottawa-Gatineau region.
Culture, calm and room to grow
Step out of any classroom at uOttawa and head straight into a city teeming with art, culture and music. Stroll through the bustling ByWard Market, explore national museums or enjoy special events like Bluesfest, Winterlude and the Canadian Tulip Festival. With live music, scenic walks and an iconic Beavertail pastry treat, enjoy our livable yet lively cityscape.
