Merit Scholarships

Merit Scholarships are offered for master’s and doctoral students.

Special Merit Scholarships

Our faculty and departments recognize our students’ excellence, seek to enhance your student experience and support your research goals through Special Merit Scholarships.

You don’t have to apply. You’re automatically considered at the time of admission. If you’re selected, you’ll receive a scholarship offer with your offer of admission. 

Scholarship value and duration  

The amount and the duration are variable and are indicated in your offer of admission.

Exclusions

Students enrolled in a Master of Engineering program, a microprogram or a graduate diploma program aren’t eligible. 

Admission Scholarships

Admissions scholarships are offered for master’s and doctoral students.

Admission Scholarship — master’s with thesis

Admission Scholarships can be awarded to Canadian students, permanent residents, protected persons or members of the diplomatic corps admitted to an eligible master’s with thesis program. You don’t have to apply. The scholarship is offered to students with an admission average of 9.0/10 or higher who enrol full-time for the duration of the scholarship (three consecutive terms).

  • The admission scholarship of $7,500 is paid at $2,500 per term for the first three consecutive terms. 
  • A second aid component may be offered by the academic unit in the form of assistantships or internal scholarships. For details, contact your academic unit.

Note: Students who receive a scholarship from an external source (e.g., CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC, OGS, FRG) still receive the first component of the Admission Scholarship. However, the value of your second component may be reduced by your academic unit or other internal funding source while your external scholarship is valid, based on the Faculty’s decision.

Exclusions

Students enrolled in a Master of Engineering (MEng) or the Master of Engineering Management program aren’t eligible for an admission scholarship.

Admission Scholarship — doctorate

We provide an admission scholarship of at least $72,000 for four years.

Admission Scholarships can be awarded to Canadian students, permanent residents, protected persons, members of the diplomatic corps or international students admitted to a doctoral program. You don’t have to apply. The scholarship is offered to students with an admission average 8.0/10 or higher and enrol full-time without interruption for the duration of the scholarship (12 consecutive terms).

This financial support has two components:

  • A scholarship of $9,000 per year, paid by the Office of the Vice-Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, in payments of $3,000 per term for the first 12 consecutive terms. 
  • A second component offered by the academic unit in the form of assistantships or internal scholarships of at least $9,000 per year for four years. For details, contact your academic unit.

Note: Students who receive a scholarship from an external source (e.g., CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC, OGS, FRG) still receive the first component of the Admission Scholarship. However, the value of your second component may be reduced by your academic unit or other internal funding source  while your external scholarship is valid, based on the Faculty’s decision.

International scholarships

International Doctoral Scholarship

This scholarship is intended for international doctoral students. Worth $45,000 over five years, it supports full-time international students admitted in May 2023 or later. You receive up to $3,000 per term for 15 consecutive terms, credited to your account. Please note that the scholarship is only granted if you pay international tuition fees.

Note: This scholarship can’t be combined with the Differential Tuition Fee Waiver or the Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship.

External awards and financial support
